Valve officially released the OLED version of the Steam Deck game handheld console today. In an interview with IGN media, Valve designer Lawrence Yang said that native dual-boot support has always been a “priority” option, but it was previously focused on developing the OLED version of Steam Deck, so it was delayed.

Note: Many players have been looking forward to Valve providing native dual-boot support, which allows the Steam Deck handheld console to run SteamOS and Microsoft Windows systems at the same time, making it easier to access Game Pass, Cloud and some Microsoft game services.

Yang promised users that native dual-boot support is always the “first priority”. After the OLED version of Steam Deck is released, more focus will be placed on this feature and it will be provided to players as soon as possible.

“Counter-Strike 2 (CS2)” has been officially launched on September 28. According to previous reports, Valve will stop supporting “Counter-Strike: Global” on January 1, 2024. Offensive (CS: GO)” support, and after installing “CS2”, this game will cover the original “CS: GO” by default.

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Valve answered the question of why the game was named after “CS2” instead of “CS:GO2”.

"CS2" has experienced the largest technological leap in the history of the "CS" series. Every system has undergone fundamental changes. Every map, every weapon, every animation, and every sound is newly produced based on the new engine. The game ended up being so different from CS:GO that we no longer considered them the same game.

In addition, Valve claimed that “from the beginning, the development team knew that “CS2” would eventually replace “CS:GO”, and they wanted to ensure that players could retain as many CS:GO skills and items as possible.” Therefore, in the early stages of game development, , the development team began to bring all weapons, stickers, music and other content in “CS: GO” to “CS2”.

Valve registered a game software trademark called “Neon Prime” in October last year. Now it seems that this is the next third-person shooting game being developed by Valve.

@Tyler McVicker has interviewed some of the people involved in the project and managed to get some great information about the game.

Summarizes it as follows:

  • Third-person ‘MOBA-Lite’ competitive shooter with class- and team-based features and ‘huge’, fully destructible map
  • Two teams compete on a very large map with the ultimate goal of defeating the final boss behind the other team’s base
  • Each class has unique abilities and personality (comparable to TF2)
  • A sci-fi setting with a “DOTA-related” background
  • The map is so huge that you can even rely on “trains” to take you around
  • Voxel-based destruction allows for almost fully destructible maps (similar to Teardown)
  • Different classes can issue “commands” to their team

According to gaming blogger Tyler McVicker, “Neon Prime” is a third-person MOBA competitive game, and the lead game designer on the project is IceFrog. There are subtle “indirect” connections between the worldview and “DOTA”, “Half-Life”, and “Team Fortress”. In terms of gameplay, it is roughly a mixture of the experiences of “DOTA2”, “Team Fortress 2”, “Overwatch”, and “Plants vs. Zombies”.

In addition, Tyler McVicker also said that the game will have PvP and PvE modes, and each character will have a different career. The graphics will be presented in a cartoon style, so it will be more reminiscent of “Team Fortress” rather than the more realistic “CS:GO”.

Tyler McVicker also revealed that the main body of “Neon Prime” has been roughly developed and is currently in closed testing. The game will be released in 2024, but more information will be officially announced as early as this year.

Valve officially released SteamVR 2.0 today, one month after launching the SteamVR 2.0 beta version in September. Officials say that bringing all the exciting new features on the Steam platform to VR in this version is the first step in our ongoing efforts to better unify the Steam ecosystem for all users and provide a more consistent experience across devices. This update also enables it to add new Steam features faster and more frequently in the future.

SteamVR 2.0 has been a long time in the making, with Valve saying in a 2019 Year-End Review article on Steam that it was “hard at work” on the update.

Here’s Valve’s take on some of the highlights coming to SteamVR 2.0, very similar to what Valve noted back in September:

Most of the current features of Steam and Steam Deck are now part of SteamVR

Updated keyboard with support for dual-cursor input, new languages, emojis, and themes

Integrated Steam chat and voice chat

Improved store to put new and popular VR games front and center

 Easily access Steam notifications

It was noticed that Valve is rumored to be developing some kind of new VR headset. In September, a mysterious device passed South Korea’s radio certification, which may mean some kind of upcoming hardware. Valve is also reportedly developing a standalone VR headset codenamed “Deckard”, which, if released, will compete with Meta’s standalone Quest VR headset.

After months of testing, Valve officially launched “Counter-Strike 2” on the Steam platform last week. However, the updated game only supports Windows and Linux systems, and there is no macOS version. Now Valve has confirmed that it has no plans to release Counter-Strike 2 on macOS.

It is noted that in the Steam Support FAQ, the company stated, “As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to stop supporting older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. Likewise, We will no longer support macOS. Combined, these people represent less than one percent of the active Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players.”

The announcement comes after a 26GB update was released for CS:GO that made the game unplayable on macOS systems. While Valve is offering Mac users refunds for Prime Status upgrades, it also means the end of official support and development for one of the most enduring game series on Apple devices.

Even though CS:GO was released in 2012, it remains extremely popular, with tens of millions of players every month. Valve’s move away from macOS will likely disappoint a lot of gamers, even if they make up less than 1% of the total user base.

According to Valve’s official introduction, “CS2” is a free upgrade version of “CS:GO”, showing the largest technological leap in the history of “Counter-Strike”. Counter-Strike 2 is powered by the Source 2 engine and features realistic, physically based rendering, state-of-the-art networking, and upgraded community workshop tools.

After the mysterious “Valve 1030” appeared in the Korean regulatory agency a few days ago, it appeared again in the FCC on August 13 and was clearly marked as Steam Deck.

The device is only now being reported in the media because Valve commissioned Quectel to register it, and Valve detectives Brad Lynch and @TVKilledMi first discovered it.

According to the published document information, Quectel submitted a Class II license change to use the certified Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth chip FC66E on the new Steam Deck. This wireless chip has already passed the certification and does not require additional certification for the new Steam Deck. .

The Steam Deck mentioned in the current document only has improved support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth, and other changes are unknown.

It was previously reported that Steam Deck engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais told The Verge that he hopes to see a leap in performance without having a major impact on battery life. Steam Deck 2 may not reach this standard until the end of 2025 or longer. . “I don’t expect such a leap in the next few years,” the engineer noted via email.

V officially launched the “Counter-Strike 2” (“CS2” and “Counter-Strike 2”) game. “CS: GO” players can directly upgrade to the new version and experience a new Shootout under the engine.

According to the official update log of “CS2”, Valve has further increased its crackdown on cheating in the game:

  • When one or more team members are found to have cheated and are permanently banned, everyone else on the team will be punished by losing their rank and overall CS score.
  • In priority mode, players with a very high overall CS score are not allowed to join a team without players with a very high overall CS score.

Valve has been fighting against cheaters in “CS: GO” before. The latest “CS2” introduced new rules as soon as it was released, which seems to be a deterrent.

According to the game introduction, “Counter-Strike 2” is a free upgraded version of “CS:GO”, showing the largest technological leap in the history of “Counter-Strike”. Counter-Strike 2 is powered by the Source 2 engine and features realistic, physically based rendering, state-of-the-art networking, and upgraded community workshop tools.

The “Counter-Strike” series pioneered gameplay focused on completing goals in 1999, and “Counter-Strike 2” will not only retain this classic element but also present the following features:

  • New CS overall score and updated priority mode
  • Global and regional rankings
  • Upgraded and overhauled map
  • Revolutionary dynamic smoke bomb
  • A gaming experience unencumbered by refresh rates
  • Newly designed sound and picture effects
  • All items from “CS: GO” have been migrated to “CS2”

According to foreign media The Verge, Valve has made it clear that it wants to build Steam Deck 2, but it has also made it clear that it will not be launched soon.

Steam Deck engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais told The Verge that he hopes to see a jump in performance without a major impact on battery life, which Steam Deck 2 may not reach until late 2025 or longer. “I don’t expect such a leap in the next few years,” the engineer noted via email.

Attachment of the original email:

What's important to us is that Deck provides developers with fixed performance targets, and the message to customers is simple - every Deck can play the same games. Therefore, we do not change performance levels lightly and will only do so when there is a significant enough improvement in performance levels.

We also don't want to get more performance at the expense of power efficiency and battery life. I don't expect such a leap in the next few years, but we're still keeping a close eye on innovations in architecture and manufacturing processes to see how things progress.

Although the current process is not enough to manufacture Steam Deck 2, Valve may update the Steam Deck and release a smaller, lighter, and more power-efficient version without changing performance. Nintendo is setting the precedent – the Switch has already received two updates, one to improve the battery and one to improve the screen, neither of which touched on performance.

Valve employee Pierre-Loup Griffais revealed that the company had developed a dedicated VR console, but it was cancelled because the cost was too high. the console may be the successor of Steam Machines, a piece of gaming hardware that failed to be released in 2013.

Griffais said they wanted to launch a VR console alongside the Valve Index VR headset in 2019, but technologies like Proton on Linux weren’t mature enough at the time to support a large number of PC games. Additionally, they don’t have a good desktop/universal system solution that would allow users to buy the console at high-end PC prices.

Griffais also said that their work on the hardware was just a PC case and a motherboard, which means that the console did not yet have specific specifications and configurations, which meant that the project was terminated very early.

Griffais later worked on the Steam Deck, a successful product that combined all of Valve’s previous hardware efforts. The Steam Deck is a portable handheld game console based on Linux that can run most Steam games.
