After months of testing, Valve officially launched “Counter-Strike 2” on the Steam platform last week. However, the updated game only supports Windows and Linux systems, and there is no macOS version. Now Valve has confirmed that it has no plans to release Counter-Strike 2 on macOS.
It is noted that in the Steam Support FAQ, the company stated, “As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to stop supporting older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. Likewise, We will no longer support macOS. Combined, these people represent less than one percent of the active Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players.”
The announcement comes after a 26GB update was released for CS:GO that made the game unplayable on macOS systems. While Valve is offering Mac users refunds for Prime Status upgrades, it also means the end of official support and development for one of the most enduring game series on Apple devices.
Even though CS:GO was released in 2012, it remains extremely popular, with tens of millions of players every month. Valve’s move away from macOS will likely disappoint a lot of gamers, even if they make up less than 1% of the total user base.
According to Valve’s official introduction, “CS2” is a free upgrade version of “CS:GO”, showing the largest technological leap in the history of “Counter-Strike”. Counter-Strike 2 is powered by the Source 2 engine and features realistic, physically based rendering, state-of-the-art networking, and upgraded community workshop tools.
