Valve officially released SteamVR 2.0 today, one month after launching the SteamVR 2.0 beta version in September. Officials say that bringing all the exciting new features on the Steam platform to VR in this version is the first step in our ongoing efforts to better unify the Steam ecosystem for all users and provide a more consistent experience across devices. This update also enables it to add new Steam features faster and more frequently in the future.
SteamVR 2.0 has been a long time in the making, with Valve saying in a 2019 Year-End Review article on Steam that it was “hard at work” on the update.
Here’s Valve’s take on some of the highlights coming to SteamVR 2.0, very similar to what Valve noted back in September:
Most of the current features of Steam and Steam Deck are now part of SteamVR
Updated keyboard with support for dual-cursor input, new languages, emojis, and themes
Integrated Steam chat and voice chat
Improved store to put new and popular VR games front and center
Easily access Steam notifications
It was noticed that Valve is rumored to be developing some kind of new VR headset. In September, a mysterious device passed South Korea’s radio certification, which may mean some kind of upcoming hardware. Valve is also reportedly developing a standalone VR headset codenamed “Deckard”, which, if released, will compete with Meta’s standalone Quest VR headset.
