In September this year, after Apple released the iPhone 15 series of phones using the USB-C interface, Apple quietly launched a 240 W USB-C charging cable on its official website, with a length of 2 meters. The speed is USB 2.0, and the China price is 243 CNY.

But obviously, this USB-C charging cable cannot be prepared for the iPhone 15 series phones.

Apple’s latest 16-inch M3 MacBook Pro models can charge at 140W via USB-C, which requires the use of a 240W USB-C charging cable, according to a support document Apple updated today.

Unfortunately, the current charging adapter provided by Apple can only support 140W fast charging, so the actual rate can only be limited to 140W.

Because previous models used the MagSafe port, the 2021 and 2022 16-inch MacBook Pro models can only charge at 140W via a USB-C to MagSafe 3 charging cable.

Although it supports 240W charging power, this charging cable can only provide USB 2.0 data transfer rate.
MacBook Air (2022 or newer)

On MacBook Air, you can fast charge using the following power supply and cable combinations:

Apple Studio Display + Thunderbolt Cable

Apple Pro Display XDR + Thunderbolt 3 Cable

Third-party external monitor capable of 85W charging + Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB-C cable

14-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or newer)

According to feedback from the Reddit community and MacRumors forum posts, iPhone 15 users encountered incompatibility issues with CarPlay and were unable to connect and pair for use.

Note: One of the changes in Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series models is the use of USB-C ports. The official USB-C cable is included, but if users want to use CarPlay after purchasing the new phones, they will need another one. Buy a data cable or converter.

Mainstream cars mainly connect to CarPlay through USB-A ports. Although Apple officially provides a wireless CarPlay solution, in order to meet the charging needs during driving, wired connection is still the best solution.

However, Apple does not provide an official USB-A to USB-C cable, and first-tier accessory manufacturers such as Belkin and Mophie do not provide such cables.

The official solution provided by Apple is to purchase a “USB-C to Lightning Adapter”, which currently sells for 243 RMB in China.

But not all USB-A to USB-C cables work properly, and in some models, the iPhone 15 series cannot enable CarPlay through the cable.

One Reddit user reported:

I was using a USB-A to USB-C cable this morning, planning to use CarPlay with my iPhone 15, and found it wouldn't connect.

Once connected, you can charge your iPhone 15, but you won't be able to enable CarPlay. In the Carplay settings on my phone, my car's name is displayed as if it is connected, but nothing is displayed on the screen.

I checked with the dealer but got no substantive response. The car I'm driving now doesn't have a USB-C port, but I tried the Apple-supplied USB-C to USB-C cable in a 2023 car and had no issues.

Another user reported:

I have tried 2 high-quality cables from first-tier brands, but both showed that they are not supported. I called Apple customer service for this. They offered various solutions, but none worked. Finally, customer service recommended me to use Apple’s official adapter solution.

I later tested 4 more cables and 3 from Sony, Samsung and Nintendo worked fine.

The three cables that cannot support CarPlay can be used for fast charging and can also be connected to high-speed PCs and VR headsets.

Another user reported:

I have the exact same problem. Tried (and purchased) several different high quality cables, have gone through all the troubleshooting and AppleCare+, nothing works.

Apple recently released a support document, which mentioned the USB-C interface and other details on the iPhone 15 phone model.

It is learned from the support document that Apple stated that all iPhone 15 series phones can charge the Apple Watch, AirPods charging box, or any accessory connected to the USB-C port with a power of 4.5W.

The document also shows that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max support USB 3.2 Gen 2, with data transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps. Apple has previously revealed that these devices support USB 3.

However, the USB-C cable that comes with the iPhone 15 Pro only supports USB 2.0 speeds, so users still need to buy higher-spec cables to get faster data transfer speeds.

All iPhone 15 series phone models support DisplayPort for mirroring 4K HDR video to an external monitor or TV with a supported USB-C to DisplayPort cable or adapter.

iPhone 15 Pro models also support recording ProRes video directly to external storage at up to 4K at 60 frames per second.

If nothing unexpected happens, Apple will bring you a brand new iPhone 15 series in September this year. Currently, the USB-C data cable for the iPhone 15 series has also been exposed online.

According to the pictures released by @MajinBuOfficial, the new iPhone 15 series models will be equipped with a new USB-C to C braided data cable, which is available in different colors and may have faster data transmission speed and higher durability. Different color iPhones may correspond to different color data cables, or they may not be given as gifts by default but allow users to purchase them by themselves.

From the picture, this data line adopts a design similar to the current MacBook data line. The current MacBook Air official data cable seems to be only available in white and black (there are also space gray, midnight and starlight colors overseas), but iMac has many colors (yellow, green, blue, pink, etc.) , purple, orange, and white seven colors, which correspond to the color matching of the fuselage, and the same is true for MacBook Pro).

The specific specifications and features of this data cable are still unclear, but it is reported that it will support data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps, which is the fastest USB-C specification to date. In addition, it will also support PD charging power up to 100W, which means users can charge their iPhone 15 faster.

In addition to the USB-C data cable, there is also news that the iPhone 15 will introduce a new MagSafe charger. The charger will feature a magnetic connection design that will hold the device more securely and prevent accidental disconnection.

Reliable source Unknownz21 revealed in the latest tweet that Apple began testing iPhone 15 models with Lightning ports in January 2022, but the prototype was quickly abandoned by Apple.

The content of the tweet translated is as follows:

Some details about the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 models:

Apple began testing the Lightning port in January 2022, but in March 2022, the focus of development shifted to the USB-C port.

The Lightning port did exist in the early days of the iPhone 15 series prototype development, but it was quickly abandoned by Apple.

Apple has been integrating USB-C ports into its Mac product line since 2015, and into its iPad product line since 2018. All iPads currently sold by Apple are equipped with USB-C ports, and currently only iPhones still use the Lightning port. Apple is planning to transition to USB-C for iPhones due to European regulations requiring universal chargers for electronic devices.

In the iPhone 15 series, Apple plans to switch to the USB-C interface to comply with European regulatory requirements, tipster Unknownz21 shared on Twitter a spy photo purportedly of the iPhone 15 Pro, on showing the new USB-C interface.

The images, in addition to showing the iPhone 15 Pro’s USB-C interface, also confirm rumors that the new machine will feature a curved bezel design.

The rumors say that Apple will make some minor design updates to the iPhone 15 Pro’s body with a larger curved bezel design, in addition to a titanium material instead of stainless steel, and the brushed metal shown in the images does look like it could be titanium.

According to Unknownz21, Apple is planning to replace the E75 Lightning controller with the E85 port controller as it transitions to USB-C.

While the image shows an iPhone 15 Pro with a USB-C port, the port change will apply to the entire iPhone 15 lineup, including the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the design change will be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro model.

Before opening this article, let me introduce you to perhaps the most familiar stranger in your life – USB. did you know that? In fact, the full English name of USB is Universal Serial Bus, the Chinese translation is Universal Serial Bus.

The translation into human-understandable language is: unified by many industry leaders who agreed to integrate a variety of protocols together to achieve the plug-and-play interface technology for computers and external devices.

With the popularity of new smartphones, phones have gradually become an important and indispensable assistant in our daily lives. This has led directly to Type C becoming the most familiar type of interface in our daily lives.

In fact, calling it Type C is not accurate enough, this common phone charging cable interface should be USB Type C. But have you ever thought, USB Type C is so widely known, where are USB Type A and USB Type B?

The company’s main goal is to provide the best possible solution to the problem. Or is it that this C does not represent the “first few generations”, but has other meanings?

Actually, the answer to both questions is no. Both Little A and Little B are there, and C is indeed the one that follows Little A and Little B in order. Here, let’s get reacquainted with USB Type A and USB Type B.

Here one more sentence, like Type A, Type B, and Type C is actually talking about the version of the USB interface form, the performance of the interface looks different; and 2.0, 3.0 these are talking about the USB interface specification version. Using data to speak, USB2.0’s theoretical bandwidth 480Mbps, while USB3.0 is up to 5Gbps, so there are leaps and bounds in data transfer capability and transmission speed.

So, let’s get reacquainted: the standard USB, whose full name should be: USB Type A. From USB 2.0 to the USB 3.0 era, although its performance has been improving, its appearance has not changed. It is important to note that the commonly used USB Type A interface is also divided into male and female connectors.

Take our common charging cable, for example, this week’s square, smooth on all sides can be inserted into the charger plug or the computer end is the male end. Admittedly, the male end is generally used in the mouse, keyboard and other small peripheral devices, or as the end of the cable. And the following four sides with U-shaped shrapnel is the female, it is often used in the host or hub and other top-end devices.

In the USB 2.0 era, the USB Type B still looks a bit naive with a big forehead, but in the USB 3.0 era, the USB Type B has become very small with bangs.

Moreover, the usage scenario of USB Type B is somewhat different from USB Type A, such as printers, scanners, and other larger external devices. In fact, USB Type B is also divided into two kinds of male and female, the male is very common, and the female is relatively rare.

However, if we talk about the working performance of USB Type B and USB Type A interfaces, they are actually 4 pins, so the difference in functional performance is not very big. As for why there are two types of USB Type B and USB Type A, I guess it may be to achieve the division of different functions of the interface.

The USB Type C, which appears after USB 3.1, has a smaller size than Type A and Type B from the appearance, and the design does not distinguish between the top and bottom, so the plugging speed will be faster and more convenient to use.

The performance of USB Type C, which comes with 24 pins, allows for more types and faster data transfer and exchange. It uses the USB 3.1 standard, so the theoretical upper limit of data transfer is 10Gbps, which is double that of USB 3.0.

The standard size cable with Type C connector can also pass current, and also supports “USB PD” which is beyond the existing USB power supply capacity, and can provide charging power up to 100W, truly realizing “5 minutes charging, 2 hours talking” for smartphones.

USB Type A and USB Type B | Source: bbs.21ic.com

Type A-C | Source: Zhihu

Through these two diagrams above, we can clearly see that it is not true that a certain type of interface absolutely corresponds to USB 3.0 or USB 2.0, but generally, those that meet the requirements of USB 3.0 are also designed to be backward compatible with USB 2.0 or even USB 1.0 compatible.

But in comparison, the USB Type C interface that we are seeing more and more often now can achieve a number of functions that other USB connector types can’t. Not only can smartphones and laptops be powered quickly via USB, but they can also achieve increasingly fast transfer speeds.

So, will it be the world of USB Type C in the near future? Sang Ning thinks it is very likely, so let’s wait and see!
