Google Chrome browser on the iPhone has launched a new feature that allows users to choose to move the address bar to the bottom of the screen. Apple’s Safari browser already supported this feature last year.

Google says this is a feature Chrome users have been waiting for for a long time. Chrome for iOS can place the URL bar at the top or bottom of the interface, depending on the user’s preference.

To move the Chrome address bar, just long-press on it and select the option to “Move address bar to bottom.” Users can also enter the settings menu and select “Address Bar” to change its location.

The current Android version of the Chrome browser does not support this feature.

Google has taken an important step in improving the security of the Chrome browser: 100% of users accessing unsafe HTTP links will automatically upgrade to HTTPS requests.

This feature is called HTTPS-Upgrades. After the user visits the old link of http://, it will automatically try to jump to the encrypted https:// protocol to access the website.

Google started rolling out the feature in the Chrome browser in July this year, and Google has rolled out the feature to all users in the stable channel starting on October 16.

“We enabled HTTPS-Upgrades by default in the master branch last week and have now pushed it to all stable releases,” said Chris Thompson, head of engineering program management at Google.

More information about HTTPS-Upgrades can be found here. Once enabled, Chrome will automatically upgrade all URLs starting with http:// to https://, which is a more secure protocol that can encrypt users’ network traffic. Chrome will try to upgrade even if the user clicks a link that explicitly states http://. If the upgrade fails, Chrome will fall back to http://.

Google announced in a blog post today that the Chrome browser on iOS and Android devices can now detect possible spelling errors in URLs and provide users with correction suggestions. These new Accessibility features were rolled out to the desktop version of Google Chrome earlier this year.

Google says the URL misspelling detector will help those with dyslexia or those who are learning a language and will help users avoid entering dangerous websites by accidentally typing the wrong URL.

It is noticed that in addition to the URL misspelling detector, Google has also launched several other accessibility features in Google Maps. Google Maps will add labels to label businesses owned by people with disabilities, similar to the already existing labels for women-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, black-owned, Asian-owned, Latino-owned and veteran-owned. Lens in Maps (formerly Search with Live View) will be able to use your phone’s screen reader to read aloud surrounding points of interest, which may be helpful for those who can’t read screens. Google says the feature will be rolling out on iOS starting today and coming to Android “later this year.”

There are some new features for other Google products as well. Pixel phone owners (Pixel 5 and above) can use the camera’s magnifying glass feature to help zoom in on anything from street signs to sewing thread. Guided Frame, announced last year to help blind or low-vision users take better selfies, is now available on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and will be available on phones like the Pixel 6 later this year. Finally, Assistant Routines (great for setting up smart home automation) also have updated accessibility features, including the ability to choose the size of shortcuts.

Google today invited some Chrome browser users in the Canary channel to test a new feature called Link Capturing for PWAs.

After the user clicks on the PWA application link, a new tab page will no longer pop up, but the corresponding PWA application window will be evoked, allowing the user to browse directly.

Browser enthusiast @Leopeva64 shared the tweak on X (Twitter) today, and Canary Chrome users can experience this feature by enabling the #enable-user-link-capturing-pwa experimental Flag.

To enable Link Capturing for a PWA application, users first open the PWA from a browser and choose to remember their choice. Users can also enable Link Capturing for a specific PWA application in the application management settings page.

Note: Microsoft Edge browser v97 version has already launched this feature, and Chrome has now also followed up with this feature.

Google Chrome has long been criticized for taking up a lot of computer resources, especially on Windows 11 or 10 systems. However, high memory usage is sometimes not entirely Google’s fault. Some websites themselves also consume a lot of resources, and Google Chrome’s new feature allows you to see at a glance which tabs or web pages are consuming your resources.

While it’s already possible to monitor the memory usage of tabs and extensions through Google Chrome’s Task Manager, Google wants to make the process easier. Google is testing a new feature in the beta version of Google Chrome (Chrome Canary) that shows how much memory an open tab is using in real time when you hover your mouse over it.

Of course, Google Chrome’s new tab feature isn’t as powerful as the built-in task manager and doesn’t display detailed information about running processes, tabs, and extensions. You can only check Google Chrome’s tab performance by hovering your mouse over the tabs and manually close the tabs that take up the most resources.

If you don’t see this feature, go to Chrome://flags, enable “Memory usage on hover”, and then restart the browser.

Google also provides other tools to monitor performance. For example, Chrome DevTool’s performance monitor is a better way to monitor memory usage and other key metrics like CPU, FPS, and DOM at a high level.

It is noticed that Google has been working on a number of Chrome performance-related improvements. For example, a major update last year added two new features to Google Chrome that could reduce the browser’s memory usage by 40 percent and extend battery life when the device’s charge drops below 20 percent.

Memory Saver is now integrated into Google Chrome’s new hover card feature, which automatically frees up memory on inactive tabs so that more resources can be allocated to active tabs and processes.

Google today launched the Chrome 118 browser stable version update, which focuses on fixing 20 security vulnerabilities and introduces some new features and changes.

Attached are the latest version as follows:

Chrome for Mac and Linux: 118.0.5993.70

Chrome for Windows: 118.0.5993.70 and 118.0.5993.71

 Chrome Extended for Mac: 118.0.5993.70

 Chrome Extended for Windows: 118.0.5993.71

 Chrome for Android: 118.0.5993.65

According to the official update log, the Chrome 118 stable version mainly fixes 20 security vulnerabilities. A total of 14 vulnerabilities are listed on the page, and the details of 6 others have not yet been disclosed.

Among the security vulnerabilities repaired this time, the most noteworthy vulnerability tracking number is CVE-2023-5218, which exists in Site Isolation and is a use after free vulnerability. The other publicly disclosed vulnerabilities are “medium risk” and “low risk”. “danger” level.

The biggest highlight of Chrome 118 is support for Encrypted Client Hello. Google began testing this feature in the Chrome Canary version in 2022. When users open websites and services in the browser, domain names are protected from being leaked to network operators. Therefore, it improves privacy because network operators such as ISPs no longer know which websites users visit.

Another security feature enables Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome to remotely disable extensions that are not installed from the Chrome Web Store.

Another enhanced Safe Browsing change improves deep scan functionality. Chrome 118 users may now be prompted to provide a password for archived files to allow Safe Browsing to analyze them.

Tab grouping is a function that facilitates users to manage browser content. It is currently available in mainstream products such as Chrome and Edge.

According to the latest improvements discovered by @Leopeva64, Google Chrome has tested an automatic grouping of tabs feature in the Canary version, but currently only the operation interface can be seen and cannot be actually used.

According to the user interface, the new feature can automatically organize similar tabs for users, and the group names can be customized. Because it has not been actually launched yet, it is impossible to test the effect.

It is found that Microsoft Edge browser has taken the lead in launching similar functions, launching “Group similar tabs (preview version)”, which can group tabs through AI and support customizing the name and icon of each group.

According to foreign technology media Windows Latest, Google plans to introduce a “Performance Panel” to the Chrome browser, replicating the “Browser Summary” function in the Microsoft Edge browser to facilitate users to track memory usage, sleep tabs and other related information.

It is reported that the Performance Panel will gradually invite Win11 and macOS users to test in the next few months to highlight the efficiency, speed and security of the browser.

In a Chromium BUG post, Google engineers stated that the development of this performance panel is now at the end and has customized a basic framework for it, which is designed to help developers test data integration technology and display it seamlessly and simultaneously.

It was previously reported that in the “Performance Panel” in the Edge browser, clicking the button will display a sidebar that shows which tabs are sleeping to save resources, as well as information from SmartScreen about how many sites and downloads have been scanned. to ensure safe information.

The panel also has a “Performance Checker” designed to give you tips on improving your browser’s performance. “Performance Checker helps identify situations where browser performance may be affected and recommends actions to you through browser highlights to reduce memory usage or other resources,” Microsoft said.

According to foreign technology media Windows Latest, Google plans to promote the “Tracking Protection” function in the Chrome browser, integrating the browser’s existing privacy features to protect users from being tracked by websites.

According to a Chromium proposal, Google is advancing the elimination of third-party cookie solutions and is promoting a new tracking protection tool called 3PCD, which allows users to fine-grained control over which websites can use third-party cookies and uses a new way to protect user privacy from third parties cookie tracking.

The media report that Google has invited users to test this new feature and introduced a new page called “Tracking Protection” under the chrome://settings/cookies page. The default setting is “Standard” .

When “Standard” mode is enabled, most third-party cookies are blocked, but not completely to ensure the proper functioning of the site.

There are also “custom” settings that allow users to customize the level of protection. Users can choose to block all third-party cookies, but some parts of the site may not work properly; users can also send “do not track” messages while browsing.

Apple in July this year by updating the form of browser extensions, allowing the Mac version of Chrome to access the iCloud Keychain passwords; and in the upcoming Chrome 118 version, allowing access to the Passkey stored in the iCloud Keychain.

Chrome for Mac currently only allows access to third-party account Passkeys stored in Google Password Manager, but in Beta Chrome 118, users can log in to websites using any Passkey stored and synchronized to iCloud Keychain.

In Beta Chrome 118, users visiting the chrome://password-manager/settings page will be presented with the option to “Use passkeys across your Apple devices”

  • When this option is enabled, passkeys created in iCloud Keychain can be accessed and used on the user’s current Apple device.
  • When this option is disabled, Passkeys created under the Chrome account on the current device are accessible.

When the user logs into the page using the Passkey created in iCloud Keychain, a prompt will pop up indicating that a Touch ID is required to confirm to continue to the next step.

Passkey needs to be on macOS 13.5 and higher to be able to use. chrome 118 stable version is expected to be officially released in early October this year.

A passkey is a digital credential used as a method of authentication for websites or applications. Key standards are a form of passwordless authentication, promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium and the FIDO Alliance. They are typically stored by an operating system or web browser and synchronized between devices from the same ecosystem using the cloud, but they can also be limited to a single device, such as a physical security key. Cryptographic keys are designed to be more convenient and phishing-resistant than traditional authentication methods.
