Google Chrome tests new feature that easily checks tab memory usage

Google Chrome has long been criticized for taking up a lot of computer resources, especially on Windows 11 or 10 systems. However, high memory usage is sometimes not entirely Google’s fault. Some websites themselves also consume a lot of resources, and Google Chrome’s new feature allows you to see at a glance which tabs or web pages are consuming your resources.

While it’s already possible to monitor the memory usage of tabs and extensions through Google Chrome’s Task Manager, Google wants to make the process easier. Google is testing a new feature in the beta version of Google Chrome (Chrome Canary) that shows how much memory an open tab is using in real time when you hover your mouse over it.

Of course, Google Chrome’s new tab feature isn’t as powerful as the built-in task manager and doesn’t display detailed information about running processes, tabs, and extensions. You can only check Google Chrome’s tab performance by hovering your mouse over the tabs and manually close the tabs that take up the most resources.

If you don’t see this feature, go to Chrome://flags, enable “Memory usage on hover”, and then restart the browser.

Google also provides other tools to monitor performance. For example, Chrome DevTool’s performance monitor is a better way to monitor memory usage and other key metrics like CPU, FPS, and DOM at a high level.

It is noticed that Google has been working on a number of Chrome performance-related improvements. For example, a major update last year added two new features to Google Chrome that could reduce the browser’s memory usage by 40 percent and extend battery life when the device’s charge drops below 20 percent.

Memory Saver is now integrated into Google Chrome’s new hover card feature, which automatically frees up memory on inactive tabs so that more resources can be allocated to active tabs and processes.
