Google announced in a blog post today that the Chrome browser on iOS and Android devices can now detect possible spelling errors in URLs and provide users with correction suggestions. These new Accessibility features were rolled out to the desktop version of Google Chrome earlier this year.
Google says the URL misspelling detector will help those with dyslexia or those who are learning a language and will help users avoid entering dangerous websites by accidentally typing the wrong URL.
It is noticed that in addition to the URL misspelling detector, Google has also launched several other accessibility features in Google Maps. Google Maps will add labels to label businesses owned by people with disabilities, similar to the already existing labels for women-owned, LGBTQ+-owned, black-owned, Asian-owned, Latino-owned and veteran-owned. Lens in Maps (formerly Search with Live View) will be able to use your phone’s screen reader to read aloud surrounding points of interest, which may be helpful for those who can’t read screens. Google says the feature will be rolling out on iOS starting today and coming to Android “later this year.”
There are some new features for other Google products as well. Pixel phone owners (Pixel 5 and above) can use the camera’s magnifying glass feature to help zoom in on anything from street signs to sewing thread. Guided Frame, announced last year to help blind or low-vision users take better selfies, is now available on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro and will be available on phones like the Pixel 6 later this year. Finally, Assistant Routines (great for setting up smart home automation) also have updated accessibility features, including the ability to choose the size of shortcuts.
