According to Bloomberg reports, TikTok for failing to protect private data by European regulators imposed a fine of 345 million euros (currently about RMB 2.653 billion), TikTok on the matter launched an appeal.

TikTok said it has appealed the penalty to the European Union’s General Court, where it challenged an order issued by its main data regulator in Ireland to eliminate “deceptive or manipulative” behaviour that could compromise privacy.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission issued a fine against TikTok in September this year for potentially exposing minors to risky content. The investigation, which covered a five-month period from July 2020 to December 31, 2020, found that TikTok’s data processing during that period violated the General Data Protection Regulation for children between the ages of 13 and 17 years.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation, the Irish Data Regulator is responsible for all investigations into TikTok, as the platform currently has an EU base in Dublin. However, the European Data Protection Board (the group of European supervisory authorities responsible for enforcing the law) must approve the final decision, given that the alleged infringement is EU-wide.

TikTok confirmed the appeals but declined to comment further. The EDPB and the Irish data regulator declined to comment.

According to the German Federal Motor Transport Administration’s official website news, Mercedes-Benz used a “reduction device” through the European 6 emission standards, which is expressly prohibited in Germany, so the models involved will face a ban on sales and a recall situation.

▲ Source German Federal Motor Transport Authority

The letter describes in great detail the use of three software-based “reduction devices” on the OM642 diesel engine used in the Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec to “cheat,” and tells Mercedes-Benz that it must fix the problems by July 27, 2023, but that has not been done since. Mercedes-Benz was told it had until July 27, 2023, to fix the problems, but has since been granted an extension.

▲ Source German Federal Motor Transport Authority

The company’s software is based on a sensor that is integrated into the vehicle to control the engine’s operation, thus improving the emission standards.

On the OM642 diesel engine of Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the response “efficiency reduction device” can control the emission of AdBlue mist urea water solution, which is a kind of technology that can produce a catalytic reaction with NOx in the exhaust gas to discharge nitrogen and water, thus reducing pollution.

In fact, earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz faced a class-action lawsuit in the High Court in London, England, by more than 300,000 diesel car owners whose vehicles had been fitted with the “efficiency reduction device” during emissions tests, thereby misleading consumers about “diesel emissions”.

Porsche recently applied to register the sound of its electric vehicles as a trademark in Europe, but was rejected by the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on the grounds that the sound was not unique enough.

Porsche says its electric vehicle sounds are futuristic, melodic, rhythmic and dynamic, and can remind consumers of the Porsche brand. Porsche has also compared the sound of its electric cars to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, the KITT scanner in “Knight Rider” and the lightsaber sound in “Star Wars.”

EUIPO believes that the sound of Porsche’s electric vehicles only imitates the sound of an internal combustion engine accelerating to reach a target speed and that this sound does not allow consumers to distinguish Porsche from other brands’ products. EUIPO also pointed out that the sound of Porsche’s electric car is not a piece of music and cannot be compared with Beethoven’s symphony. EUIPO also stated that the voices in the film and television works cited by Porsche are no longer representative of today’s world.

It is understood that although EUIPO rejected Porsche’s trademark application, Porsche has appealed.

After 20 days of publicity, the “EU Battery and Waste Battery Regulations” came into effect on August 17. An eye-catching point in this regulation is that starting from 2027, power batteries exported to Europe need to hold a “battery passport” that meets the requirements.

The content of the regulations shows that the “battery passport” is used to record information such as the battery manufacturer, material composition, technical specifications, carbon footprint and supply chain.

In addition, the “EU Batteries and Waste Batteries Regulations” divides products into automotive batteries, electric vehicle batteries, light vehicle batteries, industrial batteries, and portable batteries, and puts forward relevant requirements for each stage of the battery’s entire life cycle, covering raw material production and processing, Battery usage process and waste battery recycling.

It was previously reported that at the Davos World Economic Forum held in Switzerland on January 18 this year, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) released the “Battery Passport” proof-of-concept results for the first time. It is said that the “Battery Passport” is the key to promoting the rapid expansion of sustainable, circular and responsible battery value chains. It was developed by members of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) over a three-year period. Quality assurance for sustained performance.

The European Commission said Thursday that 14 EU countries will provide public support of up to 8.1 billion euros (currently about RMB 61.803 billion) to 56 companies working together on microelectronics and communications technology projects.

EU executives said the projects involve “R&D projects covering the entire value chain of microelectronics and communication technologies, from materials and tools to chip design and manufacturing processes”.

In April, the EU agreed to a program worth 43 billion euros (currently about RMB 328.09 billion) to boost the competitiveness of its semiconductor industry in an attempt to catch up with the United States and Asia.

The plan, known as the European Chips Act, aims to increase the EU’s share of global chip output from the current 10 percent to 20% by 2030, and comes after the U.S. announced its CHIPS for America Act.

The European Commission initially proposed to fund only the most advanced chip factories, but EU countries and parliaments have expanded the scope to cover the entire value chain, including older chip and research and design facilities.

The agreement was welcomed by U.S. chipmaker Intel, which will receive German subsidies for building a factory in Germany. “The European Chip Act will direct investment where it is most needed — in manufacturing capacity, skills and R&D. This goal has strong and broad political support and shows that the EU is serious about securing its future prosperity,” said Hendrik Bourgeois, Intel’s vice president of European government affairs.

According to foreign media BusinessKorea report, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) 4 said that in the first four months of this year, 30 countries in Europe sold 559,733 electric vehicles, an increase of 37%. This compares with 550,391 fuel vehicles sold in Europe in the same period, down 0.5 percent year-on-year.

This also means that in Europe, where fuel cars were first developed and sold, electric cars have completed a historic overtaking of fuel cars.

Data shows that electric car sales in Europe in 2019 (360,164 units) were only one-tenth of fuel car sales. However, just three years later, in 2022, the gap has narrowed to just over 60,000 units. Last year, Europe sold 1,637,766 fuel cars, compared to 1,577,079 electric cars.

Some analysts believe that the difference between the two sales largely stems from a series of environmental bills introduced by the EU aimed at reducing carbon emissions, which have been accelerating the pace of consumer choice of electric vehicles.

The EU has announced a plan to ban the sale of gasoline or diesel- vehicles from 2035 unless they use relatively more environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral fuels. On the other hand, European governments are offering subsidies for electric vehicles, and automakers are therefore actively promoting the sale of electric vehicles in Europe.

EU industry chief Thierry Breton will reportedly meet with Sam Altman, CEO of U.S. artificial intelligence research firm OpenAI, in San Francisco next month to discuss how the company will implement the EU’s rules on artificial intelligence, EU officials said Tuesday local time. global leadership rules for artificial intelligence.

Bretton will also discuss with Altman an AI agreement aimed at having OpenAI join an organization of European and non-European companies to apply the AI rules before they are implemented in 2026, the EU officials said.

Altmann angered Breton last week when he said he would quit Europe if the company struggled to comply with the EU’s upcoming artificial intelligence laws.

In response, Bretton, who set those new rules, said they were not negotiable.

“Bretton will discuss the practical aspects of implementing the AI bill. It will be a working session and there will be an in-depth discussion of the data,” an EU official said.

After meeting with Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai last week, Bretton said the U.S. tech giant and the European Commission would discuss a voluntary agreement on artificial intelligence to help companies adapt to the implementation of AI legislation ahead of time.
