According to Bloomberg reports, TikTok for failing to protect private data by European regulators imposed a fine of 345 million euros (currently about RMB 2.653 billion), TikTok on the matter launched an appeal.
TikTok said it has appealed the penalty to the European Union’s General Court, where it challenged an order issued by its main data regulator in Ireland to eliminate “deceptive or manipulative” behaviour that could compromise privacy.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission issued a fine against TikTok in September this year for potentially exposing minors to risky content. The investigation, which covered a five-month period from July 2020 to December 31, 2020, found that TikTok’s data processing during that period violated the General Data Protection Regulation for children between the ages of 13 and 17 years.
Under the General Data Protection Regulation, the Irish Data Regulator is responsible for all investigations into TikTok, as the platform currently has an EU base in Dublin. However, the European Data Protection Board (the group of European supervisory authorities responsible for enforcing the law) must approve the final decision, given that the alleged infringement is EU-wide.
TikTok confirmed the appeals but declined to comment further. The EDPB and the Irish data regulator declined to comment.
