EV sales in Europe overtake fuel cars for first time, with nearly 560,000 units in four months

According to foreign media BusinessKorea report, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) 4 said that in the first four months of this year, 30 countries in Europe sold 559,733 electric vehicles, an increase of 37%. This compares with 550,391 fuel vehicles sold in Europe in the same period, down 0.5 percent year-on-year.

This also means that in Europe, where fuel cars were first developed and sold, electric cars have completed a historic overtaking of fuel cars.

Data shows that electric car sales in Europe in 2019 (360,164 units) were only one-tenth of fuel car sales. However, just three years later, in 2022, the gap has narrowed to just over 60,000 units. Last year, Europe sold 1,637,766 fuel cars, compared to 1,577,079 electric cars.

Some analysts believe that the difference between the two sales largely stems from a series of environmental bills introduced by the EU aimed at reducing carbon emissions, which have been accelerating the pace of consumer choice of electric vehicles.

The EU has announced a plan to ban the sale of gasoline or diesel- vehicles from 2035 unless they use relatively more environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral fuels. On the other hand, European governments are offering subsidies for electric vehicles, and automakers are therefore actively promoting the sale of electric vehicles in Europe.
