Apple today said in a support document that the new Mac Pro may experience an unexpected disconnection of the internal SATA hard drive after waking from sleep. Apple said it is “aware of this issue” and will fix it in a “future macOS update.

Some models of internal SATA drives may unexpectedly disconnect from your computer after your Mac wakes up from sleep,” Apple said. This can happen if your Mac automatically goes to sleep or if you manually put your Mac to sleep. If you see a prompt saying that your disk was not ejected properly, you can restart your Mac to reconnect to the hard drive.”

As a temporary solution, users can prevent the Mac Pro from automatically going to sleep by opening the System Settings app, clicking on Display → Advanced…, and turning on the option to “Prevent automatic sleep when display is turned off.

As previously reported, the new Mac Pro was announced on Tuesday and features Apple’s M2 Ultra chip. The desktop has the same design as the Intel processor-based model coming in 2019, but because it uses Apple Silicon’s unified architecture, it doesn’t support graphics and users can’t upgrade memory, Apple suggests that customers who don’t need PCIe expansion consider buying the Mac Studio.

Apple officially updated the support documents for the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro, detailing the two Mac external monitors. Mac devices equipped with M2 Ultra can connect up to eight external 60Hz 4K displays.

The new Mac Studio has 1 HDMI 2.1 port and the new Mac Pro has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports. By expanding these ports, users can connect an 8K display at 60Hz or a 4K display at 240Hz; the M2 Ultra chip also supports up to 6 external Pro Display XDRs.

The previous Mac Studio supported up to 5 external displays when configured with the M1 Ultra chip, and Apple’s M1 Mac devices released in 2020 can only connect to 1 external display, so the new model supports up to 8, which is a considerable improvement.

Bloomberg News Mark Gurman was invited to participate in the podcast program The MacRumors Show, saying that Apple will not launch a chip using Apple Silicon at the WWDC Developers Conference held in June this year.

Mark Gurman covered a variety of Mac devices in the podcast, and the relevant information is as follows:

Mac Pro: Apple will still launch before the end of this year, but it will not be unveiled at WWDC in June. Apple has noticeably delayed the launch.

Mac Studio: Does not use the M2 series chips, and will not be updated until the M3 series is launched to avoid affecting the sales of Mac Pro.

15-inch MacBook Air: This notebook still has the M2 chip, which Apple was supposed to launch last year. The 13-inch MacBook Air may be the first to upgrade the M3 chip, and the 15-inch will be upgraded later.

Headsets: Mark Gurman said that Apple’s first AR/VR headset supports “in-air typing” functionality/features. Apple’s previous generations of headsets had a battery life of around 2 hours.

All Mac models are said to be coming in 2023 or early 2024, with the exception of a new version of Mac Studio, whose timing is “less clear.”

Gurman believes that “at least some” laptop models will be launched at WWDC, but he also pointed out that the new machine may not use the M3 chip, but retain the M2 series.

Apple MacBook

According to previous reports, the new MacBook has actually appeared in Apple’s test logs, including the 15-inch MacBook Air, which may be an indicator of new WWDC products, but more details will not be revealed until WWDC.

Apple’s Mac devices can only use integrated graphics for processing after the transition to Apple Silicon. But according to four newly disclosed patents, Apple is considering adding support for PCIe GPUs to Apple Silicon chips.

For Apple users who are planning to buy a Mac Pro, or who have high processing performance requirements, the performance of discrete graphics cards is more important. On Intel Macs, you can connect a mobile GPU via Thunderbolt or add discrete graphics inside the Mac Pro, but Apple Silicon doesn’t currently have such an extension.

According to four newly disclosed patents, Apple is already considering this issue, and Apple’s patent, titled “Mapping Logical Slots of Graphics Processors to Hardware Slots,” says, “Given their growing computing needs, graphics processing units (GPUs) are now widely used for large-scale workloads.

In another patent, “Kickslot Manager Circuitry For Graphics Processors,” Apple describes a solution that allows switching between GPUs. The slot manager circuitry can use entries in the tracking slot circuitry to specify which GPUs are used by which applications and the slot manager circuitry can pre-fetch configuration register data for a graphics working set from that location before assigning shader core resources to the graphics working set,” the patent states.

In a recent interview with foreign tech media TechCrunch, Apple executives admitted that there are still gaps in gaming on the Mac. Another media outlet, MacWorld, thinks Apple Silicon is great, but the overall gaming experience on the Mac is as frustrating as ever. If Apple wants to attract gamers, it needs to improve in many areas.

Here is a description of game performance from Apple’s Mac Mini official website: “The amazing graphics processing performance of M2 or M2 Pro allows you to play graphics-intensive 3A game masterpieces such as “Pascal’s Contract” and enjoy smoothness. High frame rate and high fidelity picture.”

In the review, foreign technology media MacWorld bought a new Mac Mini with an M2 Pro chip, 16GB of memory, and a 1TB SSD for $1,800, which can indeed handle most AAA games.

M2 Pro

Windows PC

With Prioritize Graphics mode preset to 1080P resolution, the frame rate of the tested games ranged from 70-120fps. With MetalFX Upscaling on in Quality mode, performance can be increased by about 30%. You can even crank it up to 4K and output at 40-60fps in Prioritize Graphics mode.

That said, Apple Mac gaming performance is fine, but there’s no advantage for Windows PCs at the same price point, and the number of games available for the platform is still very small.

Tim Millet, Apple’s chip designer, also admitted that there are gaps in the Apple Silicon chip for gaming. He said Apple will not use the tagline “Mac is a great gaming platform” in its communications, but Apple will continue to improve Apple Silicon’s gaming performance in the future.

Valve recently released its Steam hardware and software survey for January 2023. In terms of operating systems, the percentage of Linux players has not changed, while the number of macOS players has increased by 0.13 percentage points compared to the previous month, with a current share of 2.61%.

Apple is testing a new Apple Silicon Mac Pro running macOS 13.3, according to a tweet shared today by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

Given the March 2022 release of macOS 12.3 and the April 2021 release of macOS 11.3, it’s likely that macOS 13.3 will also be released in the spring. Apple will likely introduce a new Mac Pro at this spring’s event, followed shortly after by macOS 13.3 for supported computers. The new Mac Pro is expected to come with Apple’s new M2 Ultra chip, but the higher-end “M2 Extreme” chip has reportedly been dropped.

Last October, Gurman said that the long-awaited MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips would also be bundled with macOS 13.3, suggesting that these laptops could also be released this spring.

Gurman previously claimed that a new Mac mini was testing the M2 and M2 Pro chips, but he hasn’t talked about what’s new with the Mac mini lately. The device is expected to be released alongside the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro models. In the meantime, Apple will continue to sell Intel-based devices in the Mac Pro and Mac mini configurations.

Apple hasn’t released any new Macs since the release of the M2 chip-equipped MacBook Air last July, creating a longer window of opportunity.
