SAIC Motor calls this program its own “social leasing” service. “Social leasing” is a service the French government is planning to make electric cars cheaper. The plan has been delayed several times because French authorities fear it will mainly benefit Asian brands and not help electric cars made in Europe.

Citing sources, Reuters reports that the French government’s “social leasing” program will be launched later this year and officially implemented in 2024. The first European-built budget electric cars will enter the market at that time, including the Citroen e-C3 from Strandis and the R5 from Renault.

The MG4, imported from China, was the fifth best-selling electric car in France in May, according to Avere-France, the French electric vehicle association.
