The U.S. Department of Justice and 16 state and district attorneys general jointly filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing it of illegally monopolizing the smartphone market.

As part of its response to the DOJ lawsuit, Apple confirmed to 9to5mac that it spent three years developing an Apple Watch for Android but ultimately abandoned the idea.

In the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, they used Apple Watch as one of the evidence to prove that Apple has a monopoly position:

Apple’s Apple Watch is currently only compatible with iPhones. Therefore, if Apple can guide users to buy Apple Watch, it will be more expensive and troublesome for users to switch to other brands of smartphones later, because then they need to give up the expensive Apple Watch and buy a new, Smart watch compatible with Android system.

In response to the Department of Justice, Apple confirmed for the first time that they had seriously considered introducing Apple Watch support for Android, but said that after three years of exploration, they found that due to technical limitations, they could not build an Apple Watch that supports Android. Watch.

This is consistent with a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman last year, who had previously discussed Apple’s plans to try to bring the Apple Watch to the Android platform, but he believed that it involved more “business considerations” than technical issues.

Apple has equipped Apple Watch with a “temperature sensor”, which is mainly used to track women’s menstrual cycles. According to a list recently published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), Apple recently obtained a new patent for the Apple Watch that can track core temperature.

Apple said: “Currently, medical thermometers are mainly used to detect the core temperature of the human body, and require intrusive methods such as entering the person’s mouth or ear cavity, and are not compatible with traditional wearable electronic devices such as smart watches.”

The body temperature of the human body is constant, and its internal temperature is maintained at about 37°C, which is the so-called core body temperature. It usually refers to the rectal temperature of the human body. It is located in the inner center of the human body, surrounding the organs, and its periphery is the body temperature. Wall and skin.

In this patent, Apple introduces a non-invasive way to measure the core body temperature of an Apple Watch wearer.

Apple said that the temperature and usage environment of wearable devices can change at any time, so using wearable devices to detect the user’s core temperature can be challenging.

Apple’s invention can overcome these challenges by measuring the temperature difference between two locations within the device, one close to the device and the other touching the user’s skin, and calculating a heat flux correction factor based on the skin’s heat flux through the device .

The processor on the watch calculates heat flux correction factors through 1 or more algorithms to determine the surface temperature of the skin, which can then be used to infer the user’s core temperature. IT Home attaches the patent design drawings as follows:

Apple says it can use a thin-film thermopile to measure the temperature difference between two locations within the device, with the thin-film thermopile’s hot junction in the first location (such as near the user’s skin) and its cold junction in the second location.

For many users, Apple Watch is a wrist-worn watch, but the latest research shows that wearing Apple Watch on the arm will not affect the accuracy of its heart rate monitor.

Heart rate monitors can still provide accurate data when users wear an Apple Watch on their arm, according to a new observational study published in PubMed.

Apple Watch uses an optical heart rate sensor to measure your vital signs. It relies on a technology called photoplethysmography (PPG), which uses LEDs to illuminate human skin and then uses photodiodes to measure changes in reflected light intensity caused by blood flow.

When your heart beats, the amount of blood flowing through a specific body part, such as your wrist, increases. Between heartbeats, less blood moves. By flashing a green light hundreds of times per second, Apple Watch can calculate your heart rate. .

In the study, a surgeon wore two identical Apple Watch models, one on the wrist and one on the arm.

Statistical analysis found no systematic errors between wrist-worn Apple Watch and arm-worn Apple Watch when it comes to heart rate monitoring. In other words, the two heart rates are close enough that either measurement is considered accurate.

The study writes:

The results of this study suggest that the upper arm is a viable alternative site for using an Apple Watch to monitor heart rate during surgery.

Agreement and reliability between measurements obtained from upper arm-worn and wrist-worn devices were good, with no systematic errors and high accuracy.

Apple mentioned in an internal memo today that the company is preparing to fix a problem that causes the Apple Watch to consume too much power when updating to watchOS 10.1.

Apple says the issue will be fixed in a subsequent watchOS update, but doesn’t mention any details, so it’s unclear what the root cause of the issue is, how many customers are affected, and whether all Apple Watch models are affected. was affected.

Based on user feedback, the issue appears to be affecting various models of Apple Watch, including older models like the Apple Watch Series 5 and the latest Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Since watchOS 10.1 was released in late October, it is seen that users on major platforms complaining about excessive power consumption.

For example, a user named Martin Cooper wrote on

A user named bo_tanaka said that after upgrading to WatchOS 10.1 in the morning, he found that his watch only had about 2 hours of battery life. Some users on macrumors also reported that the battery dropped from 89% to 7% one hour after the update was completed; after charging overnight, the battery dropped from 100% to 16% in 2.5 hours. Another Ultra2 user said it only took 4 hours to go from 100% to 10% battery.

It is worth mentioning that Apple mentioned in the developer release notes of iOS 17.1 that the update fixes an “increased power consumption” issue that may occur when an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1 is paired with an iPhone running iOS 17. But apparently another watchOS update needs to be released to fully resolve the issue.

Apple is preparing to release iOS 17.1.1, and the Apple Watch issue is likely to be fixed in the watchOS 10.1.1 update, but since watchOS 10.2 is currently in beta testing, it is not expected to be released until December at the earliest.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s health team has developed relevant code in depth to make Apple Watch and Health applications compatible with billions of Android devices, and believes that in a market where the iPhone market share is not high, it can Boost sales of Apple Watch and other related products.

Bloomberg reports that Apple internally calls it Project Fennel, but it is unclear when the project was started or stopped. It is only confirmed that the development progress is close to completion.

Apple eventually halted the project due to “business considerations,” with one person familiar with the matter saying: “If you open up Apple Watch compatibility to Android devices, the value of the Apple Watch to the iPhone will be diluted.”

Quoting foreign technology media 9to5Mac as saying: Through incentives such as iMessage, Apple’s goal is still to get Android phone users to switch to iPhone.

According to Reuters, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) issued the latest ban, which may prohibit Apple from importing Apple Watch series products in the United States.

The new injunction upholds a January ruling that Apple’s Apple Watch technology that reads blood oxygen levels infringes Masimo’s patent.

However, this new ban does not take effect immediately. Instead, it will be submitted to the current US President’s staff team for review. There will be 60 days to confirm whether to approve the ban based on policy. After the 60-day review period, Apple can appeal the ban to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

An Apple spokesperson responded as follows: “Masimo is wrongly trying to use the ITC to prevent millions of American consumers from purchasing a potentially life-saving product while marketing its own copycat Apple Watch. Although today’s decision will not be immediate, There will be an impact on Apple Watch sales, but we believe this decision should be overturned and will continue to work hard to appeal.”

Masimo CEO Joe Kiani said the decision “sends a powerful message that even the world’s largest companies are not above the law.”

According to the latest report released by TrendForce, affected by the global economic downturn, global smartwatch shipments are estimated to be 130 million units in 2023. Apple leads with over 30% share, followed by Samsung (nearly 10%), Huawei, Garmin, Fitbit, and others.

The report believes that major smartwatch manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei will adopt a more conservative R&D approach in the face of many uncertainties. Although they will continue to innovate and launch new products, their design concepts are more inclined to incremental upgrades.

These manufacturers will launch high-end watch models more carefully, and some manufacturers may get involved in other smart wearable devices, but these new devices face challenges in data analysis, application integration and market maturity.

Reports say that while manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei will not upgrade processor performance at this stage, they will actively use AI technology to bring improvements, achieve more accurate measurements by fine-tuning sensor data, or dynamically adjust chip performance and battery life.

Ming-Chi Kuo today released a market forecast newsletter, that Apple next year’s launch of the new Apple Watch will not use Micro LED screen material, overall there is no significant innovation change.

In his missive, Kuo argues that the Apple Watch with a Micro LED screen will have to wait until 2025, but doesn’t rule out the possibility of 2026.

Ming-Chi Kuo also estimated the shipments of Apple Watch this year, that only 36-38 million units, down 15% year-on-year.

The most anticipated feature of the new Apple Watch is non-invasive glucose monitoring, but Kuo made it very clear in his missive that it won’t be commercially available in 2024, and probably won’t be available in 2025.

Kuo sees the Apple Watch as a classic example of a product that succeeded through repositioning, and based on current shipment trends, could face the need for repositioning if shipments decline year-over-year again next year.

Kuo believes that by integrating the Vision Pro headset and the Apple Watch, an unprecedented innovation management experience will be created that will fuel shipments of both products.

Switzerland’s Basel University Hospital recently tested five mainstream wearable devices, focusing on the assessment of its ability to interpret ECG data, of which Apple Watch performance is the most excellent.

A standard ECG uses 12 electrode leads placed on a person’s chest, arms and legs to monitor the heart’s electrical signals, while mainstream wearable devices are mainly single-lead ECGs.

The team invited 450 participants of varying occupations or education levels to evaluate single-lead ECGs from mainstream wearables and found that the ECG data from Apple’s Apple Watch was of higher overall quality and more readable.

The research team tested five wearable devices: Apple Watch, Fitbit, Sense, KardiaMobile, Samsung Galaxy Watch and Withings ScanWatch.

The study compared ECGs recorded by the aforementioned wearables to 12-lead ECG recordings interpreted by two cardiologists, showing that cardiologists can recognize atrial fibrillation more accurately with single-lead ECG data than residents or junior medical students.
