Apple admits watchOS 10.1 has an Apple Watch battery drain issue

Apple mentioned in an internal memo today that the company is preparing to fix a problem that causes the Apple Watch to consume too much power when updating to watchOS 10.1.

Apple says the issue will be fixed in a subsequent watchOS update, but doesn’t mention any details, so it’s unclear what the root cause of the issue is, how many customers are affected, and whether all Apple Watch models are affected. was affected.

Based on user feedback, the issue appears to be affecting various models of Apple Watch, including older models like the Apple Watch Series 5 and the latest Apple Watch Ultra 2.

Since watchOS 10.1 was released in late October, it is seen that users on major platforms complaining about excessive power consumption.

For example, a user named Martin Cooper wrote on

A user named bo_tanaka said that after upgrading to WatchOS 10.1 in the morning, he found that his watch only had about 2 hours of battery life. Some users on macrumors also reported that the battery dropped from 89% to 7% one hour after the update was completed; after charging overnight, the battery dropped from 100% to 16% in 2.5 hours. Another Ultra2 user said it only took 4 hours to go from 100% to 10% battery.

It is worth mentioning that Apple mentioned in the developer release notes of iOS 17.1 that the update fixes an “increased power consumption” issue that may occur when an Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1 is paired with an iPhone running iOS 17. But apparently another watchOS update needs to be released to fully resolve the issue.

Apple is preparing to release iOS 17.1.1, and the Apple Watch issue is likely to be fixed in the watchOS 10.1.1 update, but since watchOS 10.2 is currently in beta testing, it is not expected to be released until December at the earliest.
