Tesla overseas OTA recalls 30,000 model Xs, front seat child airbags can deploy accidentally

Although Elon Musk does not like the word “recall”, but due to the pressure of NHTSA Tesla issued another “safety recall” announcement, the affected 30,000 Model X models to OTA update fix for 30,000 affected Model X vehicles.

From the announcement given by NHTSA, this recall mainly involves front-seat child airbag deployment behavior.

"On certain 2021-2023 Model X vehicles, the Restraint Control Module (RCM) calibration may cause the front passenger airbag to accidentally deploy in certain low-speed crash events. This could result in a violation of Sections 21.4 and 23.4 of FMVSS 208 when a 3- or 6-year-old front passenger is not wearing a seat belt or is incorrectly positioned."

According to the recall notice, Tesla began pushing an over-the-air software update earlier this week to address the issue:

"In low-speed collisions where a 3 or 6 year old front passenger is not wearing a seat belt and is incorrectly positioned, remedial OTA firmware updates ensure that the front passenger airbag complies with FMVSS 208 sections 21.4 and 23.4, while firmware release without remedial action does not ensure compliance."

As of November 8, 2022, Tesla is not aware of any warranty claims, field reports, collisions, injuries or fatalities related to this condition, according to the report.

Due to the arrival of new energy smart connected vehicles, most models can be updated through OTA to resolve problems with the vehicle without having to go to an aftermarket 4S store for repairs and upgrades, although NHTSA requires Tesla to issue a “recall” when an OTA software update is used to resolve a problem that should have been resolved through a recall. The term “recall” may be somewhat misleading to users.

In September, Tesla CEO Elon Musk even pointed this out, calling the term “outdated and inaccurate.
