Tesla massively cancels solar projects, downsizes solar division

Tesla has massively canceled solar projects across the United States, according to industry media outlet Electrek, which said it is shutting down its solar operations in some markets.

Tesla’s solar business, which has been slowing down for years since it gained access to the solar business through its takeover of SolarCity in 2016, has finally seen some good performance from its solar division over the past few quarters. Tesla achieved a record U.S. residential solar deployment in the second quarter of 2022. Tesla also had a strong showing last quarter, deploying 94 megawatts of solar, up 13 percent year-over-year.

However, in the past three days, a number of Tesla Solar customers in recent days have reported receiving email notifications from the company that service will not be available in their area and have canceled orders. The current range of affected customers includes the greater Los Angeles area, Northern California, Oregon, and Florida.

In addition, Tesla has laid off a number of employees in its solar scheduling, planning and design departments.

In an email to customers, Tesla referred them to “Tesla Certified Installers” in their area. It looks like Tesla may no longer be doing its own solar installations and instead plans to supply third-party installers, which would be a major change in strategy.
