About 50 percent of Indian smartphone users plan to buy a new device within a year as the transition to 5G gathers pace, according to research by Counterpoint Research.

According to analyst ARUSHI CHAWLA, Samsung, Apple and OnePlus are the top brands that consumers are looking for when they next get a new smartphone. 20,000-30,000 Indian rupees (roughly $1755-2631) is their preferred price range for future smartphone purchases. Access to 5G is the third most important factor influencing consumers’ future smartphone purchase decisions.

According to Counterpoint Research’s annual smartphone consumer study in India, around half of Indian smartphone owners plan to buy their next smartphone within a year. In addition, the smartphone ASP (average selling price) in India is expected to rise as consumers say they are more likely to choose a higher-priced model for each subsequent purchase. In addition, Samsung, Apple and OnePlus topped the list as the survey respondents’ top smartphone brands for their next purchase, In terms of features, 5G was the third most important factor they would consider when planning their next purchase. This feature, on the other hand, only ranked 10th in terms of the importance of buying a smartphone at the moment.

The aim of the study was to understand the changing trends and selection preferences of consumers in terms of past smartphone holdings, current use and future purchases.

The most popular price range for smartphones held by respondents in the past, also known as the sweet spot, was INR 10,000-15,000 (approximately RMB 877-1315). In the price range of their current smartphone holdings, the sweet spot shifted to INR 15,000-20,000 (approximately RMB 1315-1755). The sweet spot further shifts to INR 20,000-30,000 (approximately RMB 1755-2631) when it comes to choosing their next smartphone preference.

Smartphones have become an important part of our lives,” says research analyst Arushi Chawla. As a result, smartphone users are trying to upgrade their devices with every purchase. When buying a new device, more than a third of users plan to keep their current device as a replacement/secondary phone. In addition, more than a quarter of respondents plan to use a trade-in option for their next smartphone purchase due to the availability of more trade-in offers. As a result, users are also more receptive to higher-priced smartphones for a better experience and newer features.”

Brand preference for next smartphone purchase.

Samsung, Apple and OnePlus are the top brands that consumers prefer when it comes to a new smartphone.

Samsung has the strongest brand loyalty, with 51% of users saying that Samsung was their last device and is the device they are currently using. In addition, 43% of existing Samsung users still cite the brand as their first choice when it comes to their next smartphone purchase.

Apple is the second most preferred brand for future purchases (20%), despite being a smaller share of the last and currently used smart device held by consumers in the region.

Chawla added: “Samsung is a strong draw for smartphone users in India. The brand’s extensive distribution network, and the fact that it launches new models in most price segments every year, have helped Samsung grow and maintain its brand value. As a result, our survey data shows that Samsung maintains the highest position in terms of past and current ownership and future purchase preferences for consumer smartphones. In terms of future purchase preference, Samsung is closely followed by Apple and OnePlus. The top reasons for consumers’ future preference for a brand are brand reputation, advanced features and user interface. Due to these factors and the desire to move to a higher price bracket when purchasing a smartphone, users tend to prefer premium smartphone brands. In addition, as consumers’ budgets for future smartphone purchases gradually rise, the availability of 5G becomes increasingly important. 5G is one of the main factors considered by all mainstream smartphone brands. 5G is also the most important factor for those respondents who ranked Apple as their next preferred smartphone.”

According to Canalys data, the North American smartphone market shipped 35.4 million units in the second quarter of 2022, down 6.4 percent year-over-year. Apple led North America for the third consecutive quarter with a 3 percent growth rate due to strong demand for iPhone 13 and the strong performance of the entry-level iPhone SE (3rd generation) throughout the quarter.

Samsung’s S Series and low-end A Series devices continued to sell well, with shipments up 4 percent. Lenovo (Motorola), TCL and Google rounded out the top 5, with 9 percent, 5 percent and 2 percent market share, respectively.

Canalys research analyst Runar Bjørhovde said the North American smartphone market has shifted after a rapid recovery in 2021. Once the world’s most resilient market in terms of demand, North America has also seen a contraction in demand in the face of triple headwinds of high inflation, declining consumer confidence and a slowing economy. Manufacturers are taking rapid steps to address the demand downturn, seeking to reduce the risk of oversupply while also preparing for new product launches in the second half of 2022. Most of the top vendors are shipping at the same level as they did in the second quarter of 2021, and the decline is largely the result of LG’s legacy gap still not being fully filled.

Canalys research analyst Brian Lynch said consumer interest in low-end and high-end devices remains unabated, but demand for mid-range devices is rapidly waning. iPhone SE (3rd generation), Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A33 are performing below initial expectations. For buyers who would normally consider a device priced between $250 and $600, declining purchasing power is forcing them to look for more affordable devices as consumers continue to feel the financial strain of inflation on their daily expenses.

At the lower end of the market, demand remains strong, but competition among manufacturers is fierce. Motorola’s new G Power, Samsung’s A13 model and TCL’s Tracfone, as well as new products from Verizon and T-Mobile, provide plenty of options for the growing demand for entry-level products. The high-end market also remains strong, with Apple’s iPhone 13 series and Samsung’s Galaxy S series both finding their time. For Samsung, the S pen in the Galaxy S22 effectively differentiates the Ultra series among high-end Android phones, making it Samsung’s best-selling model in the North American market.

Lynch believes that manufacturers and carriers are generally concerned about demand in the second half of 2022, leading to increased efforts to control inventory and other costs. To accelerate sales, vendors are expected to invest heavily in marketing campaigns with a variety of promotions and bundled sales. This investment is particularly important for those vendors in the entry-level market who are interested in expanding their market share and maintaining their carrier position.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has taken longer than we thought, and the scope and extent of its impact have far exceeded initial predictions. But amidst all the negative noise about escalating tensions between the two sides, mutual sanctions between Europe and Russia, and global economic turmoil, there has been some good news.

On Wednesday, M.video-Eldorado, Russia’s largest electronics retailer, said Chinese smartphones accounted for two-thirds of all new sales in Russia from April to June, the latest sign that the Russo-Ukrainian war is affecting Russian consumption. Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi, realme and Honor were reported to account for 42 percent of Russian smartphone sales in May 2022, up from 28 percent a year earlier.

It goes without saying that the smartphone industry as a whole has had a tough year in 2022, with everything from terminals to the supply chain under extreme pressure to ship after several rounds of cutbacks due to a significant reduction in market demand. Even during the traditional peak consumer season, the overall performance of cell phone brands was not as good as before, with a new study by Strategy Analytics on June 30 indicating that during this year’s 6.18 online shopping festival in China, smartphone sales were 14 million units, down 25% year-on-year.

In this difficult situation, how to find new market growth space is the problem facing the industry chain.

The announcement by Apple and Samsung to withdraw from the Russian market after the Russia-Ukraine conflict is a silver lining for the industry chain manufacturers. Industry sources said, “If only Apple may still have a relatively small impact, because Apple’s sales in the Russian market is not much, but with the addition of Samsung’s volume is more substantial, Samsung is the Russian market share of the highest cell phone brands.”

Strategy Analytics senior director Sui Qian said in an interview with China Business News that Apple sells an average of 4 million iPhones in Russia each year, and that the brand’s share of the Russian market is about 10 percent, so it can be estimated that the average annual shipment of the local cell phone market is about 40 million units.

In addition, according to data released by Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s cell phone market share in Russia will reach 30% in 2021, which means that the withdrawal of Apple and Samsung will give other cell phone brands a maximum of 40% market share, with a shipment gap of nearly 16 million units.

Industry sources continued: “Although there is no way to compare with the volume of the domestic market, but for the current stage of cell phone brands are also very important, several domestic manufacturers are under more pressure this year, so everyone will try to grab the market as much as possible, not to mention that there are now two less favorable competitors. If the brand performs a little better in the market, then the supply chain can certainly be relatively easy. For example, M.video-Eldorado mentioned Xiaomi, Honor and realme, the supply chain must also benefit with the three brands’ significant market share growth in Russia.”

“In fact, there are opportunities not only in cell phones, but also in electronics-related markets. Because since the conflict between the two countries, one after another announced the launch of many brands in the Russian market, covering home appliances, computers and many other product areas, the domestic industry chain in these areas are obvious advantages. If the demand in the cell phone market is not large enough, then the combined market demand in these areas is certainly able to bring a more significant contribution to corporate revenues.”

As M.video-Eldorado clearly wrote in its Q1 2022 earnings report, the main reason for the 28.1% YoY and YoY growth in the Group’s GMV (i.e. total merchandise transactions) for the period was the withdrawal of several manufacturers from the Russian market, ruble price fluctuations, and unstable supply, which stimulated user demand, with the best-selling products for the quarter including refrigerators, computers, and TVs.

It should be noted that the business opportunities arising from the withdrawal of major manufacturers from Russia are not limited to brands.

Beneficiaries of legal imports of “parallel” goods
On June 22, local time, Russia passed the law on parallel imports and published a list of goods that are allowed to be imported in parallel (commonly known as “parallel imports”); according to the law, Russia can legally parallel import some foreign goods according to the list without the prior consent of the copyright owner of the goods.

This means that not only the brand manufacturers and their suppliers have a chance to turn around in the Russian market, but also some white label and gray label industry chains have a chance to profit from it.

It is understood that the list of goods allowed for parallel imports in Russia covers a wide range of categories.

For technology and electronics, the list includes products from Siemens, Panasonic, Apple, Intel, Samsung, Dyson, Logitech and many other brands. Also in the automotive category, Land Rover, Jeep, Jaguar, Chrysler, Bentley, Cadillac, Tesla, Volvo, Skoda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. can be parallel imported to Russia.

Some industry chain manufacturers pointed out: “In fact, ‘parallel’ sales are expressly prohibited in many countries, because the price is cheaper compared to the products imported through regular channels, so once the proliferation, it is easy to cause a bad market competition environment. Especially in Europe and the United States brand for these industries is very strong suppression, Apple is one of the representative example, so in recent years the survival of these white label, gray suppliers are also significantly compressed.”

“This move is obviously detrimental to those brands that announced a temporary cut-off, but the impact on the Russian market itself is not entirely positive. In fact, Russia also banned the sale of ‘parallel imports’ after joining the WTO, but after being subjected to multinational sanctions, the prices of many imported products in Russia rose rapidly The price of many imported products rose rapidly after the sanctions imposed by many countries. Now open again is obviously a desperate move. The other side said.

The only thing that is certain about the above decision is that a large number of “parallel importers” and their supply chains will have the opportunity to enjoy this wave of dividends. In China, there is a very mature, complete and large industry chain. The world-famous Shenzhen Huaqiang North natural needless to say, the same in the Pearl River Delta region of Guangzhou, Dongguan and other places there is a very well-developed market for parallel imports.

To protect the interests of consumers in Russia. Several of Russia’s largest merchandise sales merchants have now announced that they are ready to cooperate with “parallel importers”.
