According to TheElec, the American automobile giant Ford has hired former Samsung SDI Vice President Kim Sung-hoon to develop electric vehicle power batteries.

He has been named Ford’s chief battery engineer, sources said. This is also the first time Ford has established a leadership position in the battery field.

Industry analysts say Ford has begun serious research and development of its own batteries. It is found that Blue Oval SK, the battery joint venture established by Ford and SK On, will build a factory in Tennessee, USA, and will set up a separate pilot line and facilities for battery research and development.

Prior to joining Ford, he was primarily responsible for the development of Samsung SDI’s large battery cells and their production lines. He was promoted to a Samsung SDI executive in 2017 and held several key positions in manufacturing technology development, and was responsible for developing production processes and applying them to real-world applications.

Foreign media believe that Kim Sung-hoon may work on improving the energy density of BlueOval SK batteries, a joint venture between Ford and SK Innovation, another South Korean battery manufacturer.

Ford’s previous electric vehicles have mainly used pouch batteries, but the hiring of Kim Sung-hoon indicates that more types of batteries may be used, because Samsung SDI has previously mainly produced prismatic batteries, and Ford has previously established a joint venture with CATL to produce such products. Samsung SDI said that it plans to invest 2.7 trillion won to jointly build a second electric vehicle manufacturer in the United States with Dutch automaker Stellantis NV. Battery factory, Samsung SDI will own 51% of the new factory.

Samsung SDI and Stellantis agreed in July this year to build an additional battery factory in the United States with an annual production capacity of 34GWh. This is the first battery factory since the two parties established the US joint venture StarPlus Energy in October 2021.

According to sources, they have not yet decided on the location of the second battery factory, but it is expected to be built near the first factory in Kokomo, Indiana. The plant is scheduled to break ground in April 2024 and begin full-scale production in November 2027.

Once Shuangfa’s second battery factory is completed and put into operation, its joint venture StarPlus Energy’s total annual battery production capacity in the United States will reach 67 GWh, enough to power more than 1 million electric vehicles.

Additionally, the two companies have agreed to increase the total capacity of the first battery manufacturing plant from 23 GWh to 33 GWh. Construction of the first plant began last year and commercial production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

Samsung SDI, which has been seeking to tap into the U.S. EV battery market by partnering with automakers, announced in June that it had agreed to build an EV battery factory with General Motors Co. in New Carlisle, Indiana, with the goal of starting operations in 2026. Their goal is for the plant to produce more than 30 GWh of batteries per year, enough to power more than 350,000 electric vehicles. In April this year, the two sides also agreed to set up a joint venture in the United States to produce nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical batteries, with a total investment of $3 billion.

Samsung SDI and rivals LG Energy Solution Ltd. and SK On Co. are racing to build battery factories in the United States in response to the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which provides buyers of electric vehicles assembled in North America with up to $7500 tax credit. To qualify for the tax break, 40 percent of the value of critical minerals for car batteries must come from the United States or a country that has a free trade agreement with the world’s top economy.

Most of the lithium iron phosphate batteries in the world are currently produced by Chinese companies, but South Korean battery manufacturers Samsung SDI, LG New Energy and SK On have been reluctant to develop such technologies. But this situation has begun to change.

According to BusinessKorea, Samsung SDI demonstrated its lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) battery for the first time yesterday at the IAA Mobility 2023 at the Munich Motor Show in Germany. Compared with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, this battery adds manganese to the cathode material.

The batteries previously produced by Samsung SDI were mainly high-nickel ternary batteries, and this high-performance lithium manganese iron phosphate battery will be an important step for Samsung SDI to diversify.

The South Korean battery maker has said in the past that it plans to focus on high-end batteries, aiming to offer cheaper batteries in a cobalt-free form rather than lithium iron phosphate batteries.

However, the CEO of Samsung SDI later admitted that LFP batteries are one of the important platforms in the field of electric vehicles and are working hard to develop LFP batteries in order to diversify their business and customers.

The current automotive lithium iron phosphate battery market is basically dominated by Chinese companies. my country’s battery loadings account for more than 90% of the global market share. Currently Tesla, Hyundai Motor, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz Brands such as Dess-Benz are using such batteries.

Compared with traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries, manganese-added lithium iron phosphate batteries can increase energy density by about 15-20% at almost the same cost.

In addition, Samsung SDI has also introduced a new shape battery called “side battery”, which can transfer the positive and negative terminals of the battery from the top and bottom to the side, and this battery can also set heat dissipation on the top and bottom system, thereby improving thermal safety.
