Samsung will launch the next generation of high-end smartphones early next year – Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 + and Galaxy S24 Ultra. Some specifications of the new phones have been exposed.

It has been widely reported that Samsung will use both Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processors in this range of phones, but it is unclear which versions and markets will get which version of the phone.

Some previous reports suggested that the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ would use Exynos chips, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra would use a Snapdragon processor. Now a new report from TheElec claims that Samsung will launch Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy versions of the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+.

According to reports, the Exynos 2400 version of the said phone will be launched in Africa, Asia (including South Korea), Europe, and Latin America, while the Snapdragon-powered version will be launched in North America (Canada and the United States).

The Galaxy 24 Ultra will reportedly use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy processor in all countries around the world. The report claims that the decision on how these versions of the Galaxy S24 series of phones will be distributed is in the final stages and is unlikely to change.

It is noticed that Samsung released the Exynos 2400 processor earlier yesterday, which has a 70% faster CPU and 14.7 times faster AI processing power than the previous generation. It is also equipped with an Xclipse 940 GPU based on AMD’s latest RDNA3 architecture. Samsung didn’t provide data on its GPU performance, but said it delivers significantly improved ray tracing performance in games.

The chip is reportedly manufactured on Samsung Foundry’s 4nm LPP+ node and has a 10-core CPU. Previous reports said that the Exynos 2400 has a Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at 3.1GHz, two Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.9GHz, three Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.6GHz. A Cortex-A520 CPU core clocked at 1.8GHz.

The Xclipse 940 GPU appears to be 30% faster than the Xclipse 930 GPU used in the Exynos 2200, bringing its gaming performance close to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Therefore, it is expected that the GPU performance of the Exynos 2400 is likely to be inferior to that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Other features of the chip may include 5G networking with 10Gbps download speeds, dual-band GPS, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB 3.2 Type-C port, and two-way satellite connectivity.

Twitter users RGcloudS and OreXda recently exposed the latest news of the Samsung Exynos 2400 SoC, saying the Exynos 2400 will have 10 CPU cores, GPU benchmarks part of the score over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The final configuration and packaging information for Samsung’s Exynos 2400 SoC is reportedly still up in the air as Samsung weighs its options for the SoC, but the chip is still expected to be unveiled in Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S24 series next year.

The tipster noted that while the Exynos 2400 SoC will have 10 CPU cores, all 10 cores will not be running at the same time, and the chip will schedule the number of cores it needs for each task.

Additionally, initial rumors claimed that the Exynos 2400 would be produced using Fo-WLP or Fan-out wafer-level packaging, a packaging technique that makes the chip thinner and more energy efficient. However, the tipster said that the chip could use the I-Cube process. Samsung calls this “a heterogeneous integration technology that places one or more logic chips (CPU, GPU, etc.) and several high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips horizontally on a silicon wafer, allowing multiple chips to operate as a single chip in a single package.”

And Twitter user OreXda said that the Exynos 2400 scored more than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 on the Vulkan benchmark, and if this data is true, Qualcomm will be challenged head-on from Samsung once again.

Previous rumors claimed that the Exynos 2400 consists of one high-performance Cortex-X4 CPU core, two high-frequency-running Cortex-A720 performance cores, three low-frequency-running Cortex-A720 performance cores, and four Cortex-A520 efficiency cores.

The official announcement of Samsung, the information of the tipster can only provide a certain reference nature, look forward to Samsung in the second half of this year when the official launch of this processor specifications.

According to TrendForce and Korean media heraldcorp report, Samsung plans to launch Exynos 2400 chipset next year, will return to the Galaxy S24 series.

The report states that the Exynos 2400 chipset is based on the 4nm LPP (Low Power Plus) process, which is more powerful than Samsung’s previously released 4nm LPE (Low Power Early) and LPI (Low Power Improv).

The report that the media outlet believes Samsung will launch an Exynos 2400 version of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series of phones for three main reasons:

  • Samsung has significantly increased the yield of its 4nm production process
  • Samsung will equip the Exynos 2400 chip with TSMC-led FOWLP technology
  • Samsung is confident of taking on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset

According to previously available information, the Exynos 2400 processor features a 1+2+3+4 design:

According to foreign technology media SamMobile report, Samsung plans to use fan-out wafer-level packaging (FoWLP) technology for the Exynos 2400 processor.

FoWLP means smaller package size, higher integration, and can provide I/O performance. Theoretically, the Exynos 2400 processor is smaller, more powerful, and more energy efficient.

Mini-lesson (the following is from Wikipedia):

Fan-out wafer-level packaging is an integrated circuit packaging technology that is an enhancement to the standard wafer-level packaging solution. In traditional technology, the wafer is first cut and then the individual cores are packaged; then, the individual cores are packaged on the wafer. The package size is typically much larger than the chip size.

In contrast, in a standard WLP process, the IC remains part of the wafer when it is packaged, and then the wafer is cut into smaller pieces. The final package is effectively the same size as the die itself.

According to previously available information, the Exynos 2400 processor features a 1+2+3+4 design:

  • 1 Cortex-X4 core, clocked at 3.1GHz
  • 2 Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.9GHz
  • 3 Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.6GHz
  • 4 Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 1.8GHz

The Exynos 2400 will use an RDNA2 GPU called Xclipse X940 (tentative) with 6 WGP (12 CU), 8 MB L3 cache, and hardware-level ray tracing support.
