Reuters previously reported that iPhone assembly giant Pegatron will reduce its Apple business in India and transfer control of the local factory to the Tata Group. The cooperation method will be finalized within six months.

According to Taiwan Economic Daily, Pegatron believes that the report is based on rumors and has no solid evidence, so it will not comment.

It is noted that Reuters had previously reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that Pegatron planned to transfer control of its only iPhone assembly plant in India to the Tata Group, and negotiations between the two parties have entered an advanced stage. This is the latest move by Pegatron to reduce its business cooperation with Apple. It is reported that the factory is operated by a joint venture established by Pegatron and Tata. The deal has been backed by Apple, with Tata planning to hold at least 65% of the joint venture, with Pegatron holding the remainder and providing technical support, one of the sources said.

The US electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla announced on March 1st that it will set up a super factory in Mexico. According to Taiwan media Central News Agency, Pegatron, one of Tesla’s suppliers, announced yesterday that it would expand its factory in Mexico, but declined to disclose the product category.

Taiwan media pointed out that Pegatron Mexico S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Pegatron Mexico, announced that it had acquired the Ciudad Juárez (Chihuahua) in northern Mexico for US$10.72 million (currently about 74.397 million CNY). Ciudad Juarez with a leased area of 22,296.53 square meters.

Mexican officials have previously said that Tesla will spend about $5 billion (currently about 34.7 billion CNY) to build a large factory in Monterrey, northern Mexico. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company has chosen Mexico as its next “Gigafactory” to produce “the next generation of cars.”

In addition, Pegatron plans to spend about 300 million U.S. dollars (currently about 2.082 billion CNY) to 350 million U.S. dollars (currently about 2.429 billion CNY) in capital expenditure this year, mainly for global expansion of factories in Southeast Asia and Mexico and updating machinery and equipment.

Taiwan Economic Daily said that Apple’s foundry Pegatron has passed the audit and successfully won higher-end iPhone 14 Pro assembly orders, and even started mass shipments in January this year, and is expected to continue to receive new models. Orders for high-end models of the iPhone 15 Po series.

The current iPhone 14 Pro production line of the Pegatron Shanghai Changshuo plant has stabilized, and the production will increase month by month in February and March this year.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

In January of this year, Pegatron’s revenue was NT$124.608 billion (currently approximately RMB 28.161 billion), a month-on-month increase of 10.50% and a year-on-year increase of 1.19%, a record high for the same period of the year and better than market expectations. Pegatron pointed out that the increase in revenue in January was mainly due to the communication business.

According to the Economic Daily, the market expects that Pegatron’s revenue will rise against the trend in January this year, mainly due to the drive of the old Apple iPhone 13 and the transfer of some iPhone 14 Pro orders.

Looking forward to this year, Pegatron believes that overall operations will grow slightly, but new businesses such as automotive electronics and communication products are expected to continue to grow.

Pegatron initially received some iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus assembly orders from Apple last year and was the main foundry for the iPhone 14 Plus. However, under the influence of Apple’s high pricing, the overall sales of the iPhone 14 Plus were poor, which also dragged down the performance of the main foundry Pegatron in the fourth quarter of last year.

The industry believes that when the production capacity of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max of Hon Hai, the largest iPhone foundry, was affected, Apple considered starting a wider range of diversified production at that time, and released some high-end orders to Pegatron and Luxshare Precision. This avoids production risks, which also gives Pegatron and Luxshare Precision an opportunity. It seems that Pegatron has successfully seized this opportunity.

According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily, the market expects that Pegatron’s revenue will rise against the trend in January this year, mainly due to the drive of the old Apple iPhone 13 and the transfer of some iPhone 14 Pro orders.

In addition, Pegatron shipped 350,000 to 400,000 notebook computers in January, a decrease of 30% month-on-month and 50% year-on-year, mainly due to fewer working days and traditional seasonal off-season factors. Looking forward to this year, Pegatron believes that overall operations will grow slightly, but new businesses such as automotive electronics and communication products are expected to continue to grow.

Taiwanese media pointed out that Pegatron initially received some iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus assembly orders from Apple last year, and was the main foundry for the iPhone 14 Plus. However, under Apple’s pricing strategy error, the sales of iPhone 14 Plus were poor, which also dragged down the performance of the main foundry Pegatron in the fourth quarter of last year.

When the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max production capacity of Foxconn, the largest iPhone foundry, was affected, Apple released some high-end orders to Pegatron and Luxshare Precision to avoid production risks.

For the first quarter of this year, Pegatron said that it expects the performance of the communications business (which is mainly iPhone assembly) this quarter will be “not weak in the off-season”, which is the same as the revenue performance in the fourth quarter of last year.

According to Taiwan’s “Economic Daily”, due to insufficient supply of the iPhone 14 Pro series, Apple asked the second largest mobile phone foundry, Pegatron, to join in production to alleviate the shortage of new phones. A large number of products were produced in late December. This is also the first time that Pegatron has won an OEM order for high-end iPhone models.

The high-end iPhones were previously assembled exclusively by Hon Hai, and Pegatron could only share orders for entry-level models and some special models. However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously stated that Apple is discussing with Pegatron and Luxshare Precision the possibility of converting the iPhone 14/14 Plus production line to produce the iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max.

Regarding the relevant rumors, Pegatron Tong Zixian did not respond positively but only emphasized that “let them calm down first”; as for whether there is a demand for new orders, he stated that “the customer’s request is that you stick to your posts and don’t run around. Operate well.”

Although Tong Zixian kept a low profile, foreign investors indicated that the average capacity utilization rate of Hon Hai’s Zhengzhou plant was only 20% in November, and it is expected to increase to 30% to 40% in December; and Pegatron and Luxshare have obtained contracts from Hon Hai 10% of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max orders will be shipped in large quantities as soon as late December.

In addition, foreign investors believe that Apple will diversify supply risks, and it may be difficult for Hon Hai to be the exclusive assembly supplier of the iPhone 15 Pro series in the future. Hon Hai declined to comment on this.

Regarding the new iPhone 15 series that Apple may launch next year, Pegatron Tong Zixian said that he is still racking his brains to imagine that “I am still busy with the mass production of this year’s products, and the personnel scheduling is too busy. Don’t worry about the new products next year.” guess”.

Pegatron, a major Apple iPhone OEM, announced yesterday that Liao Chi-ching, who has served as general manager and CEO for more than 6 years, will step down and be replaced by Zheng Guangzhi and Deng Guoyan as PEGATRON’s new general manager and co-CEO, the first time Pegatron has started a dual CEO system.

According to the announcement, it was announced that former General Manager and CEO Chi-Cheng Liao is only retiring from the company and will continue to serve as a director of Pegatron in the future, as well as the chairman of Pegatron’s subsidiary Kingmaker Technology.

On the same day, Pegatron released its financial results for the second quarter of this year, which showed that Pegatron’s revenue for the second quarter of this year was NT$283.658 billion (approximately RMB63.823 billion), a decrease of 12.4% sequentially and an increase of 4.2% year-over-year. Operating profit was NT$6.549 billion (approximately RMB1.474 billion), an increase of 55% sequentially and 1.43 times year-over-year.

In addition, Pegatron’s first-half revenue was NT$60.78 billion (approximately RMB136.683 billion), up 24.3% year-over-year, but net income attributable to the mother company was NT$4.783 billion (approximately RMB1.076 billion) in the first half of the year, less than half of the same period last year, which can be described as a cut.

According to Taiwan Economic Daily, Deng Guoyan has been with Pegatron for 27 years and currently serves as general manager of Pegatron’s fifth business unit, in charge of business for important customers such as notebook computers and consumer electronics. Zheng Guangzhi has been with Pegatron for 29 years and was the long-time head of Pegatron’s R&D. He is currently the general manager and CEO of Haihua Technology, a Pegatron-invested netcom module factory.

Although Pegatron has not previously disclosed that it has started generation change planning, sources close to the matter said that Pegatron has been planning to start generation change for more than half a year and finalized the plan in July this year.

Pegatron said on August 5 that the company’s factories in mainland China are running normally. “The company’s production has not stopped, and shipments have not been interrupted.”
