Microsoft today opened the door to adding support for Apple’s iCloud to all Outlook applications using the new version of Win11. Users can click the gear icon in the menu to add their own iCloud account.

The classic and UWP Outlook apps have previously supported Apple’s email service, but after upgrading to the new web-based version of Win11 Outlook, Microsoft did not update to add support.

Note: Although the new version of Outlook application launched by Microsoft has introduced a lot of new features, there are still many users who are not satisfied with the new version. Some users believe that the new version of Outlook is just a web version wearing a vest. Microsoft has also actively upgraded based on user feedback and recently added offline support.

Outlook currently supports Gmail, Google Calendar, Contacts, and more, and now it’s adding support for iCloud once again.

According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap page, Microsoft plans to introduce a new feature called Message Reminders to Outlook starting in January next year to further enrich the user experience.

The official description of Message Reminders is as follows: “After Outlook detects that the user has forgotten to reply or follow up on an email, it will pin the email to the top and mark it as requiring user action. It is worth noting Yes, only one email can be placed at the top of a user’s inbox at a time.”

This feature of Outlook focuses on improving users’ email management experience, ensuring that users can perform relevant operations on emails and prevent them from accidentally forgetting or ignoring important emails.

Microsoft said it will begin testing in January 2024, and if testing goes well, deployment will begin the same month.

According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, Microsoft has introduced new features for Outlook. When users double-click attachments in Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats, the local application can handle them.

Note: Previously, in the Outlook application, after users double-clicked attachments in the above three formats, the network application would be called for processing, but some users preferred the local application processing method.

Microsoft is currently promoting this new feature globally. After users update, double-click Word, Excel or PowerPoint attachments, and these attachments can be opened by the local default application set by the user.

Although this feature adjustment is very small, it has several advantages:

Users can open attachments faster without having to download them first or switch to another application.

Users can work with attachments in the same environment.

Desktop applications generally perform better than web applications, especially when working with large or complex files.

According to Microsoft’s announced Microsoft 365 roadmap, Microsoft plans to optimize the web version of Outlook feedback experience in October this year and support embedded pictures and videos and other content.

The roadmap description is as follows:

Make it easier and faster for users to describe their feedback and help Microsoft take action by streamlining the experience, collecting diagnostic logs, and adding features like screenshots and videos.

In addition, users can search for information related to their feedback, including updates on features in development, workarounds for problems, interim solutions and more.

Microsoft recognizes that communication is one of the major barriers to product improvement today. End users often do not have the expertise to describe problems that may be different from the actual situation, so it is a major challenge to properly gather feedback from users on issues.

Microsoft hopes to improve the user experience by optimizing the feedback mechanism and unblocking the feedback channel. Microsoft says that introducing screenshots and videos, can help the team identify problems faster and provide solutions accordingly.

The new version of Outlook was launched in public beta this year after Microsoft had “several plans” to promote the transition of users of the old and new versions.

The new Outlook app requires a subscription to Microsoft 365 or Office 365 services to use and is based on a PWA (the new Outlook app is a web wrapper, not a native app), which has caused some dissatisfaction among users.

In the latest Beta Channel Windows 11 release, Microsoft is pushing the new Outlook app to Windows Insiders. x-platform user PhantomOcean3 noticed that his Windows 11 Beta Channel version 22631.2338 (KB5030305) automatically installed the new Outlook app after a reboot. Outlook.

Microsoft has been testing a new version of Outlook since September of last year that integrates Mail, Calendar, and Contacts from the current Windows, similar to the earlier Windows 8-era Hub design that brought everything together in one place, but with a greater emphasis on functionality, and Microsoft plans to stop supporting Mail and Calendar completely by the end of 2024. Android 13 users have complained that after upgrading the latest version of Outlook for Android, the widget does not display properly or does not respond to user requests.

Android 13 users therefore tried to remove the Outlook widget from the home screen and encountered an error reminding them that the “current shortcut is not available” after trying to re-add it.

Note: This issue dates back as far as June 5, 2023, and the problem still exists in the version update Microsoft released on June 27.

Glenn Rue of Microsoft Support acknowledged the problem and promised to release a new version as soon as possible to fix it.

Microsoft is developing a new version of the Outlook for Windows application and plans to use it to replace the existing mail and calendar applications. However, the specific timing of this plan has caused opposition from users.

Initially, Microsoft sent a message to Microsoft 365 admins that a new version of Outlook would start replacing the mail and calendar apps in September 2024. However, the timing was met with displeasure from some users, and Microsoft followed up with another message saying it was “re-evaluating the timeline.”

Now Microsoft has published a new article in the Microsoft 365 message center, stating that it will replace the mail and calendar apps with Outlook sometime “late next year.” This vague timeline shows that Microsoft still hasn’t given a firm date, and it may be a while before a decision is made.

The article also said that while Microsoft 365 and Office 365 subscribers can use the new Outlook for Windows app, after the mail and calendar apps are phased out, users without subscriptions “will need to manage their email and calendar in Outlook on the web. “. This seems like an odd decision since some users might just want to use the Outlook Windows app as a desktop email client. It is noticed that in fact Microsoft has released the latest version of the Outlook app for Mac computers and does not require a Microsoft or Office 365 subscription.

There’s still a lot of time before all of these changes are implemented, so Microsoft may make some additional tweaks to its plans in the coming weeks and months.

Microsoft recently admitted that there is a bug in Outlook that will get stuck on the opening page, and now the company has released a solution.

Microsoft said that this bug is caused by synchronizing the entire offline data file (.ost) during the startup process, and the above problems may occur in Outlook when the user is using scenarios such as airplane mode.

Microsoft’s official description is as follows:

Outlook might sync the entire OST on startup, causing a lot of time to load. Outlook may stay on the splash screen for a long time before entering the app.
Solution:

  1. Open the registry
  2. Access the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar path
  3. Select RestUpdatesForCalendar and assign it a value of 1
  4. Restart the computer.
    another way:

Another solution is to display the specified REST status in the Outlook account settings. This is done by toggling “Shared Calendar Improvements” off and on:

File / Account Settings / Account Settings

 Double click to store

 More settings

 advanced

Note that "Enable Shared Calendar Improvements" is turned on.

Turn it off, then turn it back on immediately.

 Click OK.

Outlook may warn that a restart is required. It's not, but you can if needed.

Click the "X" to close the Exchange Account Settings dialog.

 Click Close.
