Ford Motor Company announced that it would recall 35,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in the United States because the high-voltage battery main contactor may overheat, resulting in a loss of driving power.

It noted that this new recall involves 2021 and 2022 Mach-E models, both of which are equipped with batteries with longer range. This follows an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in August into whether Ford handled the issue correctly as it recalled 49,000 Mach-E models in June 2022.

While the original recall was a software update, this new recall also includes replacement of the high-voltage battery junction box.

NHTSA said in August that following the 2022 recall, Ford issued a service bulletin requiring the replacement of the high-voltage battery junction box and said owners who continued to experience a loss of driving power after receiving the recall fix had the part replaced.

Ford said Wednesday it is aware of 107 cases of high-voltage contactors overheating, resulting in a loss of driving power, as it completes the 2022 recall, but has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Ford Motor Company announced in May this year that it will launch a Mustang Mach-E car with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery version, equipped with a 72 kWh battery, and a rear-drive RWD version with a cruising range of 250 miles (about 402.34 kilometres); the AWD version of the full-drive AWD version has a battery life of 226 miles (about 363.71 kilometres).

Ford’s range-extended (ER) battery version of the Mustang Mach-E uses a 91 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery. Ford said that using lower-cost lithium iron phosphate batteries will allow Ford to improve the Mustang faster. Mach-E and F-150 Lightning production.

The rear-drive version of the Mustang Mach-E with lithium iron phosphate batteries recently appeared in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As Ford Motor Company previously promised, the EPA has a comprehensive cruising range of 250 miles, which is 3 miles more than the standard version of the NCM power battery.

  • Mach-E SR LFP RWD 18″: 250 miles (402 km)
  • Mach-E SR NCM RWD 18″: 247 miles (397 km)

Interestingly, the LFP-powered Mach-E appears to be slightly less efficient than the NCM-powered version (2% lower):

  • Mach-E SR LFP RWD 18-in: 101 MPGe: 334 Wh/mi (207 Wh/km)
  • Mach-E SR NCM RWD 18-inch: 103 MPGe: 327 Wh/mi (203 Wh/km)

The price war in the electric vehicle market is intensifying, and Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley said it was a worrying trend and he was unwilling to reduce the price of electric vehicles indefinitely. price to compete with Tesla.

Earlier this week, Ford Motor Company announced that it has cut the U.S. price of its electric crossover Mustang Mach-E by up to $4,000, equivalent to an 8% price cut. This is the second price cut this year by the company, in response to a series of price cuts by Tesla that began in January. The Mach-E is Ford Motor Company’s first all-electric vehicle model, competing directly with Tesla’s Model Y.

Farley last week likened Tesla’s price war in the electric car market to a series of price cuts on the Model T that Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford began in 1913. He reiterated his view at a recent Wall Street Journal forum that Henry Ford’s tactics ultimately brought the Ford Motor Company into crisis.

“You don’t want to cheapen the product, and the people who bought at a higher price have a terrible used car value and they never forget,” Farley said. He noted that Ford Motor Co. would follow Tesla in lowering prices on models like the Mach-E, but said, “We have a bottom line.”

He didn’t elaborate on what that bottom line would be, but given that Ford Motor Co.’s EV business lost $722 million in the first quarter of 2023 and is expected to lose $3 billion this year, the automaker is clearly reluctant to lower its margins further. price. If Tesla continues to cut prices, Ford Motor Co. may not be able to keep up unless they are willing to use profits from their traditional internal combustion engine division and commercial vehicle division to support the electric vehicle price war.

Farley also brought up an interesting point in the interview that Ford Motor Company has no plans to ditch Apple CarPlay, the exact opposite of GM, which recently said it would phase out CarPlay and Android Auto in future models. Ford Motor Company “lost that war a decade ago,” Farley explained, referring to streaming into cars, adding that “70 percent of Ford customers in the U.S. are Apple users.”

Ford is the first company in the U.S. market to launch an electric pickup, along with a mid-size electric crossover and an electric cargo van for business users. But to launch these products, Ford had to spin off its passenger car business. The electric vehicle division will be named Ford Model e, while the internal combustion engine vehicle division will be named Ford Blue, a move designed to let investors and analysts see that Ford is embracing electrification.

John Lawler, Ford’s chief financial officer, said the Ford Model e should be considered a startup. Just like making a profit.

In fact, the Model e division is already losing money: $900 million in 2021, $2.1 billion in 2022, and a projected $3 billion loss in 2023. The reason is obvious: It has doubled Mustang Mach-E production to 210,000 a year and tripled F-150 Lightning production to 150,000 a year. In addition, Ford is building a battery development center in Michigan, building battery factories in Kentucky, Tennessee and Michigan, and has signed contracts for minerals needed for 600,000 electric vehicles per year.

But the other two divisions — Ford Blue and Ford Pro (commercial vehicles and services) — are expected to bring in enough cash to generate between $9 billion and $11 billion in pre-tax profit and $10 billion in free cash flow. $6 billion. So at this stage, Ford is unlikely to scale back its EV ambitions and instead absorb losses in the Model e division for now.

Ford said it expects to achieve an 8 percent EBIT margin on the Model e by the end of 2026, and overall, Ford will have a 10 percent EBIT margin by then.

According to foreign media reports, Consumer Reports no longer recommends the Ford Mustang Mach-E due to declining reliability.

According to foreign media reports, Consumer Reports has conducted its annual car reliability survey and ranking. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the only electric car to fall off the list.

Just last year, Consumer Reports included the Ford Mustang Mach-E in its list of recommended models. The magazine noted at the time that it recommended the car because of the Mustang Mach-E’s excellent reliability ratings.

Ford is reportedly releasing its first all-electric SUV, the Mustang Mach-E, in November 2019, at the same time as the U.S. and European markets, with deliveries beginning in December 2020 (first in North America and Europe).

In February, the 2022 Consumer Reports Top 10 was released, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E was selected as the best electric vehicle over the Tesla Model 3, which has been an award winner for the past two years, with no shortcomings in any of the dimensions, including road test scores, reliability, customer satisfaction, and safety, winning the overall score.

Due to the shortage of raw materials related to electric cars and more and more users choosing to buy electric cars, the whole electric car market is in a state of oversupply. In April this year, Tesla raised the price of some of its Model 3 models in the United States, and recently, Ford also raised the price of its electric cars.

On Thursday, Ford announced that it will reopen customer reservations for the 2023 Mustang Mach-E on August 30, but due to “significantly higher material costs, continued tightness in key supply chains and rapidly changing market conditions,” the MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) of the electric SUV will The MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) for the electric SUV will increase by up to about $8,000 (about 54,800 yuan). Ford said that customers who have previously placed orders will not be affected by the price increase.

The prices announced by Ford are as follows.

In addition, since Ford’s suggested retail price does not include a delivery fee of around $1,200 (about CNY 8,220), the cheapest all-electric Mustang, the Mach-E, will cost nearly $50,000 (about CNY 342,500).

Along with the price increase, Ford has added a number of new selling points, such as increasing the range of high-end all-wheel drive models by 13 miles to 290 miles (about 466.71 kilometers), making Ford’s Co-Pilot360 driver assistance technology standard on all Mustang Mach-E models, and offering BlueCruise automatic driver assistance and 360-degree camera systems on select models. The 90-day trial of the BlueCruise self-driving assistance and 360-degree camera system will be available on some models.

On August 9 of this year, Ford said it would reopen reservations for its new F-150 Lightning electric truck, but again, due to “significantly increased material costs, continued tightness in key supply chains and rapidly changing market conditions,” the vehicle’s price was raised by 7-18 percent, with the lowest-spec version starting at 4697. The lowest-trimmed version starts at $46,974 (about CNY 321,800), about $7,000 (about CNY 48,000) more than Ford executives initially advertised for a starting price of less than $40,000 (about CNY 274,000).

Ford Motor announced Thursday that it is on track to deliver 600,000 electric vehicles per year and 100 percent of its complementary power cell supply by the end of 2023, with the support of Ningde Times. Ford will begin using low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lighting models, and is expected to reach its goal of 2 million electric vehicles per year by 2026, the company said.

F-150 Lightning

Previously investors and Wall Street analysts have questioned — whether established car companies like Ford can source enough raw materials like power cells to meet their ambitious EV sales targets.

As part of a larger presentation, Ford has shown in its latest announcement that it can already secure most of the EV power cell supplies needed to meet its goals.

In a statement, company CEO Jim Farley said.

"Ford's new electric vehicle lineup has generated tremendous consumer enthusiasm and demand. And now, we're working to drive larger deployments of industrial systems.

As Ford's electric vehicle division, the Model e team is leveraging its strengths of speed, focus and creative action to ensure the supply of raw materials and batteries needed to deliver breakthrough electric vehicles to millions of customers."

Mustang Mach-E

Specifically, Ford will begin equipping EV models with low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries from Ningde Time.

"Despite the slightly lower energy density, it also has a cost advantage of about 10-15 percent -- especially in reducing dependence on mineral resources such as nickel (which is expected to become increasingly available in the next few years).

In addition, the company will offer Ningde's LFP battery packs for Mustang Mach-E models starting next year, and expand to the F-150 Lighting electric pickup lineup in early 2024."

Ford is currently relying on LG Energy Solution and SK On in South Korea to meet its production goals by the end of 2023, and expects to produce at least 2 million EV models annually by 2026.

"Even better, Ford claims to have secured about 70 percent of the battery capacity needed to support the latter goal. The automaker has signed a non-binding memorandum with Ningde Times to explore

Ford says it has so far secured about 70 percent of the battery capacity needed to support the latter goal."

Finally, the automaker has signed a non-binding memorandum with Ningde Times to explore a deeper collaboration that is expected to form the basis for much of the remainder.

Ford Mustang Mach-E sale stopped because of new battery issues https://www.techgoing.com/ford-mustang-mach-e-stopped-because-of-new-battery-issues/ Thu, 16 Jun 2022 01:30:00 +0000 https://www.techgoing.com/?p=4122 Ford Mustang Mach-E sales have been halted by the company due to a battery complication plaguing most models.

The post Ford Mustang Mach-E sale stopped because of new battery issues appeared first on TechGoing.

]]>
Due to a recent flaw found in newer models of the Ford Mustang Mach-E the company will halt its sale. Pausing the sales of this car will help Ford curb possible harm that might occur. At the moment, the company has no solution to the problem plaguing its Mach-E models.

The company reached out to all its US dealers, informing them to stop selling or displaying the Mach-E. This electric vehicle originally came into existence on November 17, 2019. It went into sale about a year after in December 2020, and ever since then it has drawn a lot of attraction to itself in the electric vehicle market.

This electric SUV retails for 295,394 yuan (~$44,000) but all sale on Ford’s official website is on hold. It will remain this way until the company can find a solution to the issue facing Mach-E. The models this issue mainly affects are those from the Cuautitlan assembly plant. The company went on to narrow the affected vehicles down to those rolled out between May 27, 2020, and May 24, 2022.

Ford Mustang Mach-E recall notice

The issue causing concern for Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles has to do with its battery. According to the company’s statement, “high voltage battery main contactors may overheat” leading to an open contactor or welding condition. If any of this happens while the car is in motion, there will be a warning from the vehicle to pull over and then an immediate loss of motive power.

From now herein, Ford dealers are not to display or sell any Mustang Mach-E vehicles. The company might as well recall any Mach-E vehicle bought directly from them. This halt in the sale is to give Ford the necessary time to provide a working solution. At the moment the company doesn’t have an exact date the solution will be ready but hopes that it’d be available in the third quarter of the year.
