Ford Motor Company announced that it would recall 35,000 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in the United States because the high-voltage battery main contactor may overheat, resulting in a loss of driving power.
It noted that this new recall involves 2021 and 2022 Mach-E models, both of which are equipped with batteries with longer range. This follows an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in August into whether Ford handled the issue correctly as it recalled 49,000 Mach-E models in June 2022.
While the original recall was a software update, this new recall also includes replacement of the high-voltage battery junction box.
NHTSA said in August that following the 2022 recall, Ford issued a service bulletin requiring the replacement of the high-voltage battery junction box and said owners who continued to experience a loss of driving power after receiving the recall fix had the part replaced.
Ford said Wednesday it is aware of 107 cases of high-voltage contactors overheating, resulting in a loss of driving power, as it completes the 2022 recall, but has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
