As for the M3 Pro, Mark Gurman said that the relevant chip only adds a pair of energy-efficient cores, but the number of GPU cores has not increased. Therefore, the performance of the M3 Pro is not much improved compared to the M2 Pro. In fact, the speed of the M3 Pro is not either It’s much faster than the M2 Pro, only 6%-14% ahead in Geekbench 6’s multi-core benchmark.

At Apple’s “Rapid Coming” conference today, Apple officially released the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, which are the first PC chips using 3-nanometer process technology.

According to officials, the new generation of graphics processors equipped with the M3 series chips has achieved the largest leap in graphics processor architecture in the history of Apple chips. This graphics processor is not only faster and more energy-efficient, it also introduces a new technology – dynamic caching, and brings new rendering features such as hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading for the first time on Mac. Rendering speed is up to 2.5 times faster than M1 series chips. The CPU’s high-performance cores and energy-efficient cores are 30% and 50% faster than the corresponding cores in M1, respectively, and the neural network engine is 60% faster than those on M1 series chips.

M3 is equipped with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 24GB of unified memory, and is up to 20% faster than M2; M3 Pro is equipped with a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU, and 36GB of unified memory, and is up to 10% faster than M2 Pro; M3 Max is equipped with 16 Core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB unified memory, up to 20% faster than M2 Max.

According to Apple, the new generation of graphics processors in the M3 series of chips has achieved the largest graphics processor architectural leap in the history of Apple chips. Unlike traditional graphics processors, it has dynamic caching, so the use of local memory in the hardware can be allocated in real time. With the support of dynamic caching function, the memory consumption of each task accurately meets the needs. This industry-first technology is transparent to developers and provides the foundation for a new graphics processor architecture. It significantly improves the average utilization of the graphics processor, thereby significantly improving the performance of more demanding professional-level apps and games.

Powered by M3 series chips, hardware-accelerated ray tracing comes to Mac for the first time. Ray tracing technology simulates the behavior of light in a scene, helping apps create lifelike, realistic images. With the addition of this feature and the new graphics processor architecture, professional apps can run up to 2.5 times faster than M1 series chips. In addition, the new graphics processor also brings hardware-accelerated mesh shading to Mac, achieving a dual improvement in graphics processing capabilities and energy efficiency. It can also support games and apps that require high graphics processing to present scenes with more complex visual effects. According to officials, the M3 graphics processor can achieve performance comparable to M1 with half the power consumption, and can achieve up to 65% performance improvement at peak power consumption.

All chips in the M3 family feature Apple’s signature unified memory architecture. This results in high bandwidth, low latency, and unparalleled energy efficiency. In addition, the M3 chip supports memory capacities of up to 128GB, making possible workflows that were previously impossible to handle on a laptop, such as AI developers who can now run larger Transformer models with billions of parameters.

M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips also introduce an enhanced neural network engine for accelerating powerful machine learning (ML) models. The new neural network engine delivers up to 60% speed improvements compared to M1 series chips, further accelerating AI/ML workflows while keeping data on-device to protect user privacy.

According to a recent blog post by DigiTimes, Apple will launch MacBook products equipped with M3 chips in 2024.

There is currently controversy over the release date of MacBook products with M3 chips. Some sources believe Apple will release it this year, while others believe it will be postponed to 2024.

The research department of DigiTimes has estimated the global laptop market in the next five years from 2023 to 2028, believing that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) will be 3%. Laptop shipments will grow 4.7% next year, ending a 2-year streak of declines, driven by easing inflation and new product launches.

The part of it is as follows:

The share of Arm laptops will decline in 2023. This is because most of Apple’s Laptop product lines use Arm-based CPUs and Apple’s shipments have dropped significantly this year. The American brand manufacturer plans to switch to CPUs built on TSMC’s 3nm node in 2024 for performance upgrades.

Mark Gurman believes that Apple may directly announce the launch of new Mac products through a press release in October, rather than holding a grand launch event like the iPhone; while Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple is unlikely to release a MacBook Air/Pro equipped with an M3 chip this year model.

Bloomberg reporter and Apple reporter Mark Gurman shared some information about Apple’s M3 chip last night, and mentioned that the new MacBook Pro models currently participating in the test are equipped with 36GB and 48GB unified chips. memory, “which suggests that there may be some new options”.

Later, another Apple whistleblower, Vadim Yuryev, retweeted Gurman’s tweet with the following addition: “Is there a most important detail that was overlooked? M3 Max is equipped with 48GB of memory, which means that the base version The M3 will have 12GB of RAM for the first time, never 8GB again! Any ideas?”

Note: For reference, starting from the M1 Max, the number of GPU cores and supported memory capacity of Apple’s M-series Max chips are usually 4 times that of the basic version of the M chip. For example, the M1 chip supports 8/16GB of memory, the M1 Max chip supports 32/64GB of memory; the M2 chip supports 8/16/24GB of memory, and the M2 Max chip supports 32/64/96GB of memory.

According to the calculation that the memory supported by the M-series Max chip is four times that of the basic M-series chip, this means that Apple’s Mac series models equipped with M3 processors are expected to add 12GB of memory, or directly replace the previous entry-level 8GB of memory. Mac models currently on sale with the base M2 chip have a minimum memory capacity of 8GB and cannot be manually replaced by yourself.
