Samsung and LG are preparing to equip the next-generation iPad Pro with an OLED display

Samsung and LG are preparing their factories for mass production of the first iPads with OLED displays, according to South Korea’s ETNews, which describes the displays as “hybrid” panels because they use a combination of both flexible and rigid OLED technology.

Apple plans to launch the new 13-inch MacBook Air, 11.1-inch iPad Pro and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays in 2024, according to display industry analyst Ross Young, who has a track record of Apple rumors and Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who expects the first OLED-equipped MacBook will be launched next year.

Young previously said that the new MacBook Air and iPad Pro models will use a “dual-layer” OLED display with two red, green and blue emitting layers to increase brightness. He also said that all these devices will support ProMotion, with refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

All existing iPad and MacBook device models are equipped with backlit LCD displays, while OLED displays feature self-emitting pixels that do not require a backlight, allowing for higher contrast, greater color accuracy, and lower power consumption for specific display conditions. Apple has already used OLED displays in its latest Apple Watch and iPhone models, but this does not include the iPhone SE.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Ultra is expected to switch to microLED displays in 2024, with other Apple products likely to follow in a few years. microLED will be the next display technology Apple adopts after OLED, paving the way for higher contrast, higher brightness and lower power consumption.
