Google is optimizing Chrome to save tab groups, expected to arrive in version 110

Google brought several new features to Chrome in version 101 this April, such as adding comments to desktop save passwords, tab group saving, and an experimental new download UI.

Since then, you’ll be able to save a lot of tabs as tab groups in the browser, making its interface more concise and helping to improve productivity.

However, the tab-saving feature has many shortcomings, such as losing it when you restart the browser.

Now, Google has finally introduced the ability to save tab groups locally as bookmarks for Chrome Canary. For now, however, most users may need to enable it manually on the chrome://flags page at

  • Open chrome://flags/#tab-groups-save from Chrome’s address bar.
  • Set the status of the experimental feature to Enabled.
  • Restart Chrome.

After restarting, when you right-click on the tab group you will see an option to “Save group” and when you choose to toggle the save feature, this group of tabs will be added to the browser’s bookmarks bar.

In addition, you can now choose to close entire groups or individual tabs in the tab bar without losing any information.

As of now, the feature is expected to be part of Chrome v110, but some Reddit users have speculated that the Chromium team might merge it with version 108 or 109 so that it’s available on more users’ computers sooner rather than later.
