According to the latest data released by market research firm Gartner, the world’s top 10 OEMs in 2022 chip spending fell 7.6 percent year-on-year, accounting for 37.2 percent of the overall market. Apple remains the world’s largest semiconductor buyer in 2022, with a market share of 11.1 percent.

Gartner senior director analyst Masatsune Yamaji said in a statement that the majority of the world’s top 10 semiconductor customers are PC and smartphone OEMs. he said.

"Sharp declines in consumer demand for PCs and smartphones have prevented these OEMs from increasing unit yields and shipments.

Continued semiconductor shortages in the automotive, networking and industrial electronics markets have increased average selling prices (ASPs) for chips and accelerated semiconductor revenue growth in these markets.

As a result, these factors have led to a decline in the share of top OEMs in total semiconductor spending in 2022 compared to 2021."

For the fourth consecutive year, Apple topped the list of consumer semiconductor customers. The company reduced its spending on computing microprocessor units (MPUs) by 11.7 percent as it continued to shift to application processors with its own in-house designs. However, Apple increased its spending on non-memory chips by 2.8 percent.

Samsung Electronics increased its chip spending by 2.2 percent and maintained the second position. Semiconductor spending increased in 2022 as the company gained more market share in the smartphone market due to its leadership in foldable phones.
