Apple paid a settlement of up to $30,000 to eligible US developers

Following a settlement between Apple and a number of companies including Cameron, the tech giant has now begun paying out settlements to eligible App Store developers. The lawsuit, which was initiated by Cameron and other companies alleging Apple had a monopoly on iOS app distribution and in-app purchases, also forced Apple to launch a “small developer assistance fund” as part of the settlement.

Eligible developers will receive between $250 and $30,000 in compensation from Apple, depending on their total revenue on the App Store. Settlements may be higher in some cases, as not all eligible developers have submitted applications. Only U.S. developers who earned less than $1 million per calendar year through the App Store between June 4 2015, and April 26 2021, and submitted their claims by the May 20, 2022 deadline will receive payments.

According to court documents, approximately 67,000 developers are eligible to file claims. It is unclear how many claims have been submitted. Apple has denied all allegations and the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing by the company. Developers who received the settlement cannot sue Apple separately for the same claims made in the class action, including any claims that Apple overcharged them because of the App Store’s fee structure.
