Apple delays Live Activities lock screen information module for iOS 16

Apple announced that iOS 16 will not have the previously introduced Live Activities feature at launch, and that the new Sports and Music lock screen information display modules will come later. One of the updates to the iPhone lock screen announced by Apple in iOS 16 is Live Activities, a widget that displays update information to the user.

For example, soccer teams have new notifications when they score a goal, updating the score in real-time. The feature and its associated new API, called ActivityKit, are already in the latest developer beta, but it will not be released to the public with the rest of iOS 16.

“Please note that Live Activity and ActivityKit will not be included in the initial public release of iOS 16,” Apple said in a developer messaging update.” They will be made public in an update later this year, and you will be able to submit apps with Live Activities to the App Store.”

This is far from the first iOS 16 feature that Apple has delayed updating until after release. At WWDC 2022, the company gave a sneak preview of Freeform, a collaborative brainstorming app that won’t be available until the end of the year.

There are also a series of smaller improved elements coming to iOS 16, such as Matter smart home connectivity.
