Last November, source @Kepler broke the news that AMD is developing a small APU called “Phoenix 2”. Its GFX ID is 1104, a “miniature version” of Phoenix.
The chip is currently in the Coreboot patch database. AMD divides its Phoenix APU into two types, Phoenix (1) and Phoenix (2), which means that this APU will serve as the second revision of the Ryzen 7040 series, which we will refer to as Phoenix 2 hereafter.
According to Coelacanth-Dream, there are two GFX1103 “RDNA 3” IDs for the AMD Phoenix APU, one of which is GFX1103_R1, which has a full 512 KB L2 cache, while the second, GFX1103_R2, has only 256 KB.
Simply put, AMD felt that the low-power mobile platform might not be able to use the 512 KB L2 cache, so it was castrated to half of the original in the new revision, and it is expected that some manufacturers will use it for entry-level platforms to replace Mendocino APU.
In fact, the whistleblower @MLID has also mentioned a “Little Phoenix” product with similar specifications before, but this is an “ultra-low power and compact” chip for the Steam Deck handheld. It is not ruled out that this is the same possible series of products.
According to @Kepler_L2, who has been following the Phoenix 2 APU, this series of chips will also have a lower number of computing units, which sounds like a conservative version of the Phoenix APU, and the efficiency data of this Phoenix 2 APU will definitely be interesting.
The first laptops powered by AMD Phoenix APUs will be unveiled in March 2023, and we think we might see this Phoenix 2 product later in 2023, like a handheld.
