7-Zip old decompression software release version 23.00, only 1.5M in size

7-Zip is a very high compression ratio of open source compression software, support for LZMA2 and other seven open source algorithms, as well as support for a wider range of compression formats .7z, small size (1.5MB), perfect functionality, in addition to the default UI does not meet the domestic aesthetic almost nothing to fault, can be called the real “small but beautiful It’s really “small but beautiful”.

7-Zip has just released a new 23.00 (beta), compared to the last update, version 22.01, released on July 15, 2022.

Most of the 7-Zip source code is distributed under the GNU LGPL license. the AES code is distributed under the BSD license. the unRAR code is distributed under two licenses: the GNU LGPL and the unRAR restricted license. And users can use 7-Zip on any computer, including those used for commercial purposes, even if they don’t donate it.

7-Zip is mainly used on the Windows platform, but 7-Zip 23.00 (beta) is also available for Linux and macOS, as well as a dedicated host version. In addition, you can also choose to use p7zip, a port of 7-zip.

7-Zip supports many compressed/uncompressed file formats, including ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, Z, gzip, bzip2, LLHA, tar, cpio, RPM, and from version 4.42 onwards the CD/DVD image file format ISO, but due to copyright issues, the ACE format is no longer supported. In addition, starting with 7-Zip 9.14 beta, 7-Zip also supports opening and decompressing VHDs.

Update Notes:

  • 7-Zip can now compress files into 7z and xz archives using the new ARM64 filter, which improves the compression ratio for data containing executables compiled for the ARM64 (AArch64) architecture. In addition, 7-Zip now parses executables (files with exe and dll filename extensions) before compression and selects the appropriate filter for each parsed file;
  • For x86 executables, use the BCJ or BCJ2 filter;
  • For ARM64 executables, use the ARM64 filter. Previous versions used the x86 filter BCJ or BCJ2 by default for all exe / dll files.
  • The default segment size of the BCJ2 filter has been changed from 64 MiB to 240 MiB, which improves the compression ratio for executables larger than 64 MiB.
  • Improved UDF support.
  • Cpio: support for hard links.
  • Some changes and optimizations to the WIM creation code.
  • When the new 7-Zip creates a multi-volume archive, 7-Zip only keeps the volumes that can still be changed open. Previous versions kept all volumes open until the end of the package creation process.
  • On Linux and macOS systems, when 7-Zip opens, extracts, or creates a multi-volume archive 7-Zip can now reduce the number of files that are open at the same time. This avoids failures due to large volume counts, as there is a limit on the number of files a single program is allowed to open in Linux and macOS.
  • 7-Zip has optimizations in the code of the context menu in Explorer: improved the speed of preparing the menu display when an external program selects a large number of files for a context menu containing 7-Zip menu commands.
  • The code for drag-and-drop operations in the 7-Zip file manager has been changed. Drag-and-drop operations with the right mouse button are now also supported in some cases.
    Bug fixes:
  • ZIP compression: 7-Zip did not write “data descriptors” for some files if multiple files were compressed into a stdout stream using multi-threaded ZIP compression (-so option).
  • ext4 compression: 7-Zip does not correctly extract symbolic links to directories from ext4 compression.
  • HFS and APFS compression: 7-Zip incorrectly decoded uncompressed blocks (64 KiB) in compression forks.
  • Fixed other known bugs.

7-Zip main features

  • 7z format using LZMA and LZMA2 algorithms with a very high compression ratio
  • Supported formats:
  • Compression/Decompression: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM
  • Decompression only: ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DEB, DMG, FAT, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, VHD, WIM, XAR, Z
  • For ZIP and GZIP formats, 7-Zip provides 2-10% higher compression ratios than with PKZip and WinZip
  • Improved AES-256 encryption algorithm for 7z and ZIP
  • 7z format supports the creation of self-releasing compression packages
  • Windows Explorer integration
  • Powerful file manager
  • More powerful command line version
  • Support for FAR Manager plug-in
  • Support for 87 languages
