With iPhone business, Apple gobbles up 85% of global smartphone profits in 2022

According to the latest report published by market research firm Counterpoint Research, global smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022 were 1.2 billion units, down 18 percent year-on-year, the worst performance in the fourth quarter since 2013.

Apple was the biggest winner in the quarter, despite a major setback in the global smartphone business. The report noted that Apple shipped 70 million iPhones worldwide in the fourth quarter, up from 49.2 million in the third quarter of last year, but down from 81.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Apple whale of the global smartphone market share of operating profit in 2022 reached a staggering 85%. The report points out that Apple’s iPhone shipments reached 18% in 2022, a new historical record; the company’s cell phone business revenue share reached 48%, a new best result.

Jeff Fieldhack, the agency’s research director, said.

"After a year plagued by economic and geopolitical turmoil, Apple was able to meet these challenges better than any other major smartphone vendor after skillfully addressing production issues."
