US PC shipments down 12.1% year-over-year in Q3, with only Apple and Acer bucking the trend

According to a report published by market research firm Canalys, PC shipments in the U.S. market fell 12.1 percent in the third quarter of 2022. Dell, HP, Apple, Lenovo and Acer occupy the top five seats, of which only Apple and Acer achieved counter-trend growth during this period.

Canalys said laptops suffered a heavy drop in the quarter, down 14 percent year-over-year. That was partly because companies were more cautious about spending on costs, and partly because of lower demand from the consumer and education sectors. Desktops, however, grew 1 percent.

Brian Lynch, the research analyst at Canalys, said: “The U.S. PC market will be contracting in the long term, with consumer and education demand both affected by inflation. Now, the previously resilient business sector has begun to weaken and will see its first year-over-year decline in 2022.

Apple and Acer were the only two companies to post positive year-over-year growth in the third quarter, but Dell managed to retain the No. 1 spot. Dell had a 26.1 percent market share, compared to 27.6 percent the year before.
