U.S. launches new safety investigations into Stellantis, GM, Ford vehicles

According to foreign media reports, the U.S. Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on July 26 that it is conducting five investigations into more than 1.8 million Stellantis, Ford and GM vehicles for stalling and other problems. The electronic parking brake “inadvertently activates when the vehicle is in motion.

NHTSA said the issue could cause the vehicle to stall. The company had issued a bulletin in 2016 instructing dealers to replace the module and check the electrical connectors for rust.

NHTSA is also investigating 21,348 2019 to 2021 model-year Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid vehicles. The agency previously received 40 complaints that the vehicles may have stalled or lost power due to a faulty transmission. Stellantis said the company is cooperating with the investigation.

NHTSA has also opened recall inquiries on about 290,000 2016 Dodge Journey, Jeep Compass and Jeep Liberty Patriot vehicles because the vehicles’ crankshaft or camshaft sensors may intermittently stop working and could cause stalls.NHTSA is reviewing whether the recall should be expanded for 2016 Stellantis said the company is cooperating with the investigation.

NHTSA has also opened a preliminary investigation into 25,538 2021 Ford Bronco SUVs. The agency previously reviewed the Bronco with the 2.7L Eco-boost engine in May for a possible defect in the vehicle’s “valve train. Ford did not immediately comment on the issue.

The NHTSA said it learned at a June 7 meeting with Ford that the alleged loss of power was a “catastrophic engine failure due to engine valve failure.

The NHTSA also launched a preliminary investigation into 190,000 2020 to 2021 Cadillac XT5, XT6 and GMC Acadia vehicles because the vehicles’ rearview cameras may not work properly due to a crimped coaxial cable connector. GM said the company is “cooperating with NHTSA’s investigation and will continue to investigate the issue internally.
