Polish developer Michał Gapiński has released a new version of his “Tesla Android Project” that brings Apple CarPlay support to Tesla users.
According to Gapiński, version 2022.25.1 offers “100% functional CarPlay integration for any Tesla model” and comes with several new features and bug fixes.
According to the release, the software now supports DRM video playback for watching Netflix and more, directional locking for apps like Apple Music to run in landscape mode, and Android 12.1 support for better stability and performance.
It’s worth noting that Gapiński’s CarPlay solution includes a Raspberry Pi that supports LTE and Wi-Fi access and runs a custom version of the Android-based firmware with a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable and LAN port.
That means you can connect to this Raspberry Pi with an in-car browser and display the CarPlay interface on the Tesla’s car screen, supporting various Apple apps such as Maps and Apple Music. In addition, you can even operate it while driving and also control it through the media buttons on the Tesla’s steering wheel.
IT House has learned that although Apple CarPlay is already present in many electric cars, Tesla does not officially provide support.
In 2020, there was talk that Tesla planned to support Apple Music, but that feature never actually materialized.
At the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple is showcasing “next-generation” “CarPlay” for a wide range of compatible vehicles, supporting multiple displays in the car, and even adjusting the temperature or heat in the car’s air conditioning, among other things.
Apple said the first cars to support the new “CarPlay” experience will be released by the end of 2023, including Ford, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Honda, Acura, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Nissan, Volvo, Porsche and many more, but not Tesla.
