The source of online rumors: AI-generated fake news sites exposed

There are 49 so-called news sites whose content is almost entirely generated by artificial intelligence software, according to a report by NewsGuard, an organization that tracks online rumors.

These sites are known to publish hundreds of news articles per day, with many signs of AI-generated content, such as “bland language and repetitive phrases. Some articles also contain false information, and the origin of the articles is unclear: many are not signed or use fake avatars. And many sites are filled with advertisements, suggesting they were created to make money by placing ads, according to NewsGuard, which says experts’ fears that news sites might be generated by artificial intelligence have come true.

It’s also unclear exactly who runs these sites: many have no contact information, and most of those NewsGuard contacted didn’t respond, and those that did were vague about how they operate. At the same time, their reach seems to vary widely, with some having tens of thousands of fans on Facebook and others not.
