Tests show new Apple MacBook Pro solid state drives write faster, read slower

According to the latest tests, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips have faster SSD write speeds compared to their predecessors.

Earlier press reviews of the new MacBook Pro were released, and Macworld and Tom’s Guide tested the SSD read and write speeds of Apple’s latest laptop.

Macworld tested the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro using the Blackmagic Disk Speed app, achieving read speeds of 5,372MBps and write speeds of 6,491MBps in a 2TB storage configuration. The previous-generation 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip and 1TB of storage achieved slightly faster read speeds than the 16-inch M2 Pro, but slower write speeds of 5321 MBps.

Blackmagic Disk Speed Results

The test results published by Tom’s Guide also show that the new M2 Pro has faster write speeds than the M1 Pro, but slightly slower read speeds. Testing the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 Max found that the notebook scored similarly to the 16-inch M2 Pro, achieving read speeds of 5,319 MBps and write speeds of 6,402 MBps.

While the new MacBook Pro has slightly slower read speeds based on these tests, users are unlikely to notice a difference in day-to-day performance unless they are working with very large files. Storage speed and performance are also influenced by other factors, such as storage capacity.

Last year, it was announced that Apple had dramatically cut the SSD speed of the base M2 MacBook Air, with one less SSD chip in the laptop. 256GB of storage capacity in the MacBook Air with a single NAND chip resulted in 50 percent lower read speeds and 30 percent lower write speeds. Previous base versions of the MacBook Air used two NAND chips. Apple said in a statement that the actual performance of MacBook Air is “even faster” and uses a “higher density NAND” chip.
