At the press briefing on the “first anniversary” of the construction of Shanghai’s Future Industry Pilot Zone, Lu Yu, director of the High-tech Division of the Lingang New Area Management Committee, said that Tesla’s energy storage plan will be completed within the year. It was put into operation with a production scale of nearly 40GWh.

He also mentioned that Lingang has successfully recruited the first batch of aggregators to promote the precise response of virtual power plants; promote technological research, use the implementation of energy singularity, pre-research new nuclear fusion energy system technology, and develop controllable and sustainable nuclear power plants. The fusion tokamak device promotes the development of the ultimate energy source – controllable nuclear fusion.

According to previous reports, Tesla’s Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory will plan to produce Tesla’s ultra-large commercial energy storage batteries (Megapack), which is scheduled to be put into production in the second quarter of 2024. In addition, the factory initially plans to produce up to 10,000 commercial energy storage batteries per year, with an energy storage capacity of nearly 40GWh, and its product offerings cover the global market.

The goal of the Megapack is to serve as a giant battery to help stabilize the energy grid. Tesla says each Megapack unit can store 3MWh of energy, enough to meet the electricity needs of 3,600 homes for an average of one hour. The new Shanghai factory will initially produce 10,000 Megapack batteries per year, equivalent to approximately 40 gigawatt hours of energy storage, which will be sold globally.
