Tesla to launch cheaper 4680-cell Model Y in U.S.

According to a recent report by Electrek, Tesla plans to bring the “short battery life” version of the Model Y to the North American market in 2023. They found that the code for Tesla’s online configurator website was already visible on the back end, and the new model was ready to be unveiled.

That version, which appears to be a dual-motor AWD version, will be equipped with a 4680 battery from the Texas factory, has a range of 279 miles (449 kilometers), and will start at just $61,990. For comparison, the existing long-range Model Y has an EPA range of 330 miles.

Tesla actually briefly offered this cheaper Model Y in North America as early as 2021, but the company deleted this configuration shortly after because Musk said he did not want to sell it. Like the shorter range.

Tesla officially still has only two versions of the Model Y, including the expensive dual-motor all-wheel drive long-range and performance versions, which are $65,990 and $69,990, respectively.
