Samsung expects semiconductor chip profits to reach 13.1 trillion won in 2023

According to TheElec, Samsung expects its annual operating profit from semiconductor sales to reach 13.1 trillion won (approximately 71.264 billion yuan) in 2023.

The figure was shared with employees in a note Samsung sent to them on Wednesday, explaining the number of their expected bonuses they will receive in January. Samsung pays employees a performance bonus at the beginning of each year, and the amount is paid out of the excess profits that each business unit had targeted for the previous year. Up to 20% of surplus profits are used as bonuses, and each employee can receive up to 50% of their annual salary as an incentive.

Samsung also shared each business unit’s target profit and revenue in 2023, with the device solutions division, which covers memory, logic chips and foundry business units, projecting an annual operating profit of 13.1 trillion won. If the goal is met, employees are expected to receive bonuses ranging from 5% to 11% of their annual salary in 2023, payable in January 2024.

To qualify for the top 50 percent bonus, they must hit an annual operating profit of 28 trillion won, which will be nearly impossible next year given the current slump in the global memory chip market.

If Samsung’s own expectations come true, its device solutions division’s operating profit next year will be about half of its 2022 annual operating profit.
