In a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) on Jan. 9, Tesla said it plans to invest $717 million to build four more new buildings at its Austin facility, totaling 1.4 million square feet of floor space, starting as early as the end of this month.

The largest of the four projects, called “Cell 1,” will cover 693,093 square feet and is expected to cost $368 million. Construction is expected to begin on Jan. 23 and be completed on Feb. 12, 2024.

The second largest project, Drive Unit, is a 423,032-square-foot project with an estimated cost of $85 million. Construction is expected to begin on Feb. 6, 2024, and be completed on Jan. 15.

The third largest project is a battery project covering 321,186 square feet at a cost of approximately $260 million. The project’s start date is Jan. 30 and the completion date is Dec. 18.

In addition to these latest applications, Tesla also submitted an application on Dec. 20 of last year for a $58 million project covering 174,979 square feet. Construction of the project was then expected to begin on Dec. 27, 2022.

With these five projects, Tesla will expand its footprint in Austin to approximately 5.6 million square feet.
