Recently held in Las Vegas at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Hyundai Mobis demonstrated a prototype IONIC 5 equipped with e-corner module technology, which is capable of 90-degree steering at all four wheels and can complete special movements such as lateral driving and 360-degree turnaround in place.

The e-Corner integrates an electric motor, electric shock absorbers, brake by wire and steering by wire, making it a complete package that can be installed in a plug-in vehicle. The video shows that the purpose-built car can rotate all of its wheels 90 degrees in the same direction, enabling the car to perform any operation such as tank turns, crab rows, set circles, and diagonal rows.

The e-Corner is said to use four wheel motors, with braking and electronically controlled steering and electronic dampers integrated into each wheel unit, completely detached from the traditional chassis design and without the need for a steering column. Each wheel can be independently accelerated, braked and steered to achieve true four-wheel drive at will, and the system can be adapted to a wide range of vehicles from SUVs to mid-size compact cars.

The Look Up U8 also demonstrated lateral driving capability a short while ago, but works differently from the IONIC 5 prototype by carrying a McNamee wheel.

Hyundai Mobis Expo hasn’t released any other details about its e-Corner module, but it has huge potential to simplify the entire assembly process of electric vehicles, while also providing more maneuverability for drivers.

The technology was unveiled back in 2018, and Hyundai plans to have it optimized and matured by 2023, with a complete solution by 2025.

Mobis was founded in 1977, the full name is Hyundai Mobis (Hyundai mobis), as one of the three main Hyundai Kia Motors Group, is ranked seventh in the world’s auto parts suppliers, but also the 2018 Global Fortune 500 companies. As the largest auto parts company in South Korea, Hyundai Mobis has a wide range of businesses and there is almost no auto parts product that Hyundai Mobis is not involved in.
