Tesla beat out its longtime rival Volkswagen to become the country’s largest electric car brand in 2022, according to foreign media reports.
Tesla sold 69,962 pure electric vehicles in Germany in 2022, while its closest rival Volkswagen sold 63,206 electric cars, according to KBA (German vehicle registry).
Since entering the European market, the Model 3 and Model Y has enjoyed significant sales success, and they have even become top sellers in many markets.
In September 2022, the Tesla Model Y beat the Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Tiguan as the best-selling car in Germany for the first time, the first time in German history that an electric car sold more units than any other gasoline car on the market.
In November 2022, the Model 3 replaced the Model Y as the best-selling electric car in Germany. Vehicle registration tracking data from German agencies show that the Model 3 sold 6,811 units in Germany that month.
According to KBA, the top three selling cars in Germany in December 2022 were the Tesla Model 3, the Fiat 500 and the Tesla Model Y.
In addition, the Model Y and Model 3 are also the best-selling electric cars in Germany in 2022. By selling these two models, the company holds 14.9% of the electric vehicle market share.
