Over the years ZTE has made it a custom to release a device with an under-display selfie sensor, this year the AXON 40 Ultra is its new entry. This device just like previous under-display camera devices from ZTE conceals the selfie camera. The selfie camera now hides under the phone’s screen, giving users a full display with no interruptions. Asides from the under-display screen, the AXON 40 Ultra comes with amazing specs and features.

ZTE AXON 40 Ultra specs and features

ZTE AXON 40 Ultra specs

This device launched alongside the ZTE AXON 40 Pro, but the two devices don’t have much in common in terms of design and specs. To get a full glimpse of what the 40 Ultra looks like, check our unboxing in this article. The new ZTE under-display camera device comes with the following specs:

  • Screen: 6.8 inches AMOLED with a 93.1% screen-to-body ratio and a 144Hz refresh rate.
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
  • Storage: The device has the following storage configurations: 8GB/256GB, 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, and 1TB/16GB.
  • Main Camera: Quad setup, with a 64MP main camera, 64MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP periscope telephoto.
  • Front Camera: 16MP front-facing under-display camera.
  • Battery: 5000mAh battery with 80W fast charge.
  • Operating System: MyOS 12, based on Android 12.

The AXON 40 Ultra display is so good that it is on par with rival displays from the likes of Samsung flagship devices. A few smartphone manufacturing companies have tried the under-display camera design on their smartphones yet none of them is close to what ZTE accomplished with the AXON 40 Ultra. This device is a design marvel.

The latest ZTE Axon 40 Ultra, its screen can be described as immaculate. Under the FHD specification, it achieves the seamless integration of the real off-screen front-facing area and other areas, and there is no difference in strong light or text display. Selfie is saying goodbye to “hazy beauty”, not afraid of strong light exposure, and face recognition still responds in seconds.

In addition to the classic off-screen forward shots of the Axon series, this ZTE Axon 40 Ultra has another surprise, which is the leap forward in imaging capabilities.

Not only the classic 35mm humanistic lens from its own Z series, but also a full 64-megapixel three main camera lineup, which also includes a very rare periscope telephoto. The rear camera of ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is absolutely sufficient, and it can be called the level of an image flagship. The charm of 35mm, I believe you will understand it in seconds after you experience the torment of 24mm wide-angle.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra not only solves the problem of insufficient physical fineness of the screen, but also eliminates the jagged edge of the text from the pixel rendering aspect, and achieves the integration of the under-screen area and the surrounding area, and no longer has obvious boundaries under strong light. .

It is the most perfect full screen under 1080P. If there is an upgrade in the future, it is only possible that the physical parameters of the screen such as 2K resolution and LTPO variable refresh rate will be improved.

More importantly, the selfie effect of the front-facing area under this screen is not bad.

Without the hazy beauty of previous generations, the lens will not be overexposed when encountering strong light. Even if you don’t have a little selfie needs, it can perfectly meet the needs of daily face unlocking in seconds. If you are not a selfie expert, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra definitely has the screen you want most.

In addition, the flagship image configuration further improves the positioning of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra. With the image configuration blessing of its own Z series, it is one step closer to an all-around flagship.

The full 64-megapixel triple main camera effect is amazing. Especially the main camera, the currently popular wide-angle main camera is really difficult to compose, and the 35mm humanistic lens will not disappoint me every time I use it. What’s more, it also has this periscope ultra-telephoto lens and a super wide-angle lens with good quality. Although the configuration of all focal lengths can’t roll over those video camera kings, it is also full of their skills.

The rest of the Snapdragon 8 processor, 80W fast charge, 5000mAh large battery and other configurations are also quite a lot. ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is definitely not only a perfect full screen, its other configurations are also very colorful.

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra uses three rear cameras, all of which are 64 million pixels. Among them, the superhuman main camera and the ultra-wide-angle main camera both use a custom Sony IMX 787 sensor, which supports full-pixel omnidirectional focusing. The humanistic main camera is still a unique 35mm focal length, and the periscope telephoto main camera also has a 1/2-inch outsole, and its image strength cannot be underestimated.

The device adopts a square shape, and the top and bottom are flat. In addition to independent dual speakers, Type-C interface, Sim card slot, and microphone, there is also an infrared remote control.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra

The past two generations of the ZTE Axon have used an under-display camera, this year’s ZTE Axon 40 Ultra will do the same. Not only will this year’s Ultra Axon model use an under-display camera, it’ll also use a very formidable camera setup. This setup will house three cameras, two of which will use the same sensor.

The sensor in question is the IMX787 outsole sensor from SonyNubia Z40 Pro is the first device to use this sensor, and it launched in the month of February 2022. Sony’s IMX787 outsole sensor is capable of outputting 50MP images and has an f/1.6 aperture and also a 1/1.3 ± inch outsole. ZTE Axon 40 Ultra will use a total of two of these sensors, camera ability on this device will be gorgeous.

The camera setup used on this device will be “twice the imaging power” we usually from ZTE flagship devices. This triple setup will use a vertical arrangement which will house a triple 64MP camera setup. The setup consists of the main camera, an ultrawide camera and a periscope telephoto camera. All cameras will be able to record videos in 8K, this will ensure crisp videos and vivid colour representation. With the under-display camera, ZTE is using a new 400PPI flexible camera technology, which will have a 16MP + 2.24μm fusion large-pixel sensor.

The screen on this device is to feature a 120Hz refresh rate and a multi l-touch sampling of 360Hz. It’ll also use an independent security chip to protect user data. This device will launch on May 9, and pricing and availability of the device will be announced during the launch.

ZTE was rumored to have been working on the successor to the famed Axon Series which was supposed to be named the Axon 40 Series. But today, all those rumors and speculations came to a halt when Ni Fei, the President of the Mobile Division of ZTE, officially confirmed the existence of the Axon 40 Series along with the unveiling date of May 9, 2022.

ZTE-Axon-40-Ultra-confirmed.jpg

This morning, Ni Fei took to Weibo to announce the all-new Axon 40 series and its reveal on May 9th. Besides the launch date, Fei also talked about 2 “Core” surprises that we will get to see that day.

Fei didn’t reveal any specifics like new features or specifications of the 40 Series devices. But it was noticed that Fei made the post on Weibo using the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra, which is a part of the upcoming Axon 40 series. A previous rumor suggested that the Axon 40 series consists of three devices. The standard models are the Pro model and the Ultra model. Fei’s post from the Ultra model, more or less confirms the rumor.

ZTE-Axon-40-Ultra-display-.jpg

Another image was shared on Weibo from the official ZTE account that provides an insight into the front design of the Axon 40 Series. The display seems extremely curved on the sides, and the top bezel is very thin, which provides the device with an almost bezel-less look. The front camera isn’t visible. The reason behind it is that it features an under-display camera like the predecessor Axon 30 5G and Axon 20 5G smartphones.

ZTE Axon 40 specifications (rumored)

The specifications for the Axon 40 series are complete speculation. But according to the leaks so far, the Axon 40 will carry a 6.67-inch OLED display with 400 PPI pixel density that supports Full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 20:9.

The device is also supposed to be equipped with an under-display fingerprint sensor. There hasn’t been any confirmation regarding this but if it comes true. The Axon 40 will have greater security.

The smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm chip. Supposedly, it will be the Snapdragon 8 gen 1 SoC chip that clocks at 3.2GHz. The rumor also suggests that the 40 Series will come with different memory variants with a maximum RAM of 12GB and internal storage of 512GB or 1TB.

There are some leaks regarding the camera department too. According to the leaks, the 40 series is expected to come with 64-megapixel primary camera, 8-megapixel secondary sensor, and a 5-megapixel tertiary sensor.  There will also be a 44-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calling.

Lastly, the device is expected to have the latest Android 12 with a custom skin and a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging.

These are all just based on leaks and rumors. There hasn’t been any official confirmation. But we will surely find out the validity of this information on May 9th.
