According to the source Albacore (@thebookisclosed), Microsoft is preparing new features for the next major update of Win11 (or Win12), mainly focusing on smart notifications, Spotlight activities, cursor indicators, Depth of field effect, “Your devices” tab, energy saving page and more.

The content based on the foreign technology media pureinfotech, attached the unreleased functions/features of Microsoft Win11 / Win12 as follows:

Smart notifications

The user opens the “Settings” > “System” > “Notifications” path, and a new “Enable smart notification filtering during standard working hours” option is added to the “Notifications” settings.

It’s unclear how this feature works, but it is estimated that after users enable this option, some non-work-related notifications will be blocked during normal office hours, thereby reducing the interference of other notifications with your work.

Spotlight activities:

In “Settings” > “Privacy & Security” > “Camera”, a new “Spotlight activity” option is added to the page to display suspicious peripheral and sensor usage.

Mouse Cursor Indicator

In Settings > Accessibility > Mouse Pointer & Touch, there’s a new option to enable “Pointer indicator,” which adds a crosshair effect for better positioning of the mouse pointer.

The company has even added the “Windows Key + Ctrl + X” keyboard shortcut. Note: This is not a brand new feature, it is just now integrated into the Settings app.
Your device tab in the Settings app

On the home page of the Settings app, Microsoft is working on adding a new card called “Your Device” that will include basic technical hardware and software information about your device. Some of this information includes Windows 11’s processor, memory, version .

Energy Saver:

In Settings > System > Power, the “Battery Saver” setting is renamed “Energy Saver.”

Depth of field effect

In Settings > Personalization > Background, it was discovered that Microsoft is working on a new Depth of Field feature that adds a parallax effect to background images as you move your mouse.

In earlier versions, the feature was noted to use AI, but in the latest update to Windows 11, Canary Channel removed the “AI” reference, which may indicate that the feature won’t use AI.

Qualcomm officially launched the X Elite processor at the Snapdragon Summit that opened yesterday and announced 9 of its first partners.

At this event, current Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Windows + Devices Vice President Pavan Davuluri also attended the event and discussed Snapdragon X The impact of Elite and NPU on the future of Windows.

Satya Nadella said in his speech:

Generative AI has set off another revolution after the mobile revolution and cloud revolution, which will affect the entire Internet and PC market.

Many people's views may still remain on whether the system interface can be more humane, whether the interface interaction can be more natural, and whether human capabilities can be enhanced through computing, but I think the introduction of AI will soon transcend these categories.

The arrival of AI will completely change the interaction of operating systems, UIs and applications.

Satya Nadella claims that integrating generative artificial intelligence into Windows will change the way we interact with computers. He said that in the foreseeable future, this revolutionary new interface will bring about disruptive usage methods.

Satya Nadella then talked about hybrid computing, part of which is as follows:

Looking at the innovations that are coming, on devices with powerful NPUs, the core question is how to write applications that fully leverage local computing and cloud inference, which is what we plan to achieve through the Windows AI ecosystem.

So I think we're actually going to have a lot of applications with local models, hybrid models, and that's the future of AI.

Mixing is important because not all PCs are capable of rendering AI workloads natively. Next-generation computers equipped with NPUs will be able to handle more aspects of artificial intelligence locally, but not everything can be done on the device.

This will be how features like Microsoft Copilot work, where most of the functionality you’ll use is rendered in the cloud but mixed with on-device processing where it makes sense.

Satya Nadella said:

A new generation of artificially intelligent computers is being created, so the work we're doing together will bring together these experiences that wouldn't be possible without new system architectures. For us, the most important experience will be Copilot.

At the beginning of the Windows system, we introduced the concept of the Start button. In the future, Copilot will become the new start button in Windows systems.

For example, Copilot can understand our intentions, guide us to open a certain application, help me learn, query, and create, completely changing the user's habits.

According to the latest research released by Qunzhi Consulting yesterday, with the continuous advancement of algorithms and hardware, the application of AI technology on the PC side will become more extensive and efficient. The agency believes that computers that can provide hybrid intelligent learning and reasoning capabilities with integrated software and hardware can be called AI PCs, such as PC products that combine Intel’s 14th generation Meteor Lake CPU and Microsoft’s Windows 12 system.

According to Qunzhi Consulting’s forecast, with the release of AI CPU and Windows 12, next year will be the first year for large-scale shipments of AI PCs. Global AI PC shipments are expected to reach approximately 13 million units that year.

Then in 2025-2026, AI PC shipments will continue to maintain an annual growth rate of more than double digits and become a mainstream PC product type in 2027. The above prediction also means that the global PC industry will “steadily enter” the AI era in the next five years.

At present, some major hardware manufacturers have made similar statements. It was previously reported that Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in August this year that its upcoming Meteor Lake 14th-generation Core processor will usher in the era of AI PCs (artificial intelligence computers).

Pat Gelsinger said on the previous Q2 earnings call, “We believe that Intel is well-prepared to seize this emerging growth opportunity.” “Importantly, we believe that AI PC will be a key factor in the PC market in the next few years.” A critical turning point, rivaling the importance of Centrino and Wi-Fi.”

In the first half of this year, HP CEO Enrique Lores said in an interview with CNBC that AI is subverting the PC business and HP will meet various challenges in this wave. He also revealed that HP will launch a new PC as early as 2024. Data that takes professional analysts several hours to gain insight into can be easily obtained by ordinary users in a very short time.

It is no longer a secret that Microsoft is working on the “next generation of Windows” codenamed “Windows 24H2”. Since Microsoft has resumed its three-year development cycle, it was widely believed that the next generation of Windows would be named “Windows 12”. But things took a turn for the worse when a Microsoft employee went on record to say that it was all just talk, and that there was no such thing. What’s even more surprising is how quickly they deleted their words from X (formerly Twitter).

Over the weekend, a Microsoft employee took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to ongoing speculation about Windows 12 development. The tweet bluntly refuted the rumored existence of the operating system. However, the tweet was withdrawn shortly after users began asking questions.

A senior Microsoft program manager claimed in multiple tweets that “Windows 12 doesn’t exist.” The reason for these tweets being deleted is unclear, adding a layer of mystery to the story. The employee may not have known that Microsoft plans to name the next generation of Windows ‘Windows 12’.

Why talk about Windows 12? Here’s a little background: Developer Rafael Rivera found a hint pointing to “Windows 12” in a piece of VMWare software called ESXI Version 8.

When people on Reddit took a closer look, they realized that the software had been hinting at “Windows 12” for more than six months. So, does this confirm the existence of Windows 12? Not so fast. Normally, such hints in software such as VMWare are meaningless. A former employee of tech giant Oracle also chimed in. They mentioned that VMWare developers sometimes add such hints in “future planning and testing”. Just because a name is there doesn’t mean it’s finalized.

The former VMWare Workstation developer wrote in a tweet, “I’m not there anymore, so I can’t speak to this particular situation, but I’m not shocked to see it.”

However, the Microsoft program manager’s quick deletion of the tweet only added fuel to the fire.

While the Windows giant has been tight-lipped about the arrival of the next-generation Windows, a mention of the next-generation Windows did appear at the Build 2023 conference.

As we previously reported based on a job posting, Microsoft is working on a web-centric version of Windows designed to challenge the dominance of Chrome OS. Web-centric Windows 12 won’t replace the traditional desktop environment, but it will complement it.

Brad Sams, a reporter who specializes in reporting on Microsoft, revealed in the latest podcast that Microsoft plans to launch the next Windows system in 2024, three years after the launch of Windows 11, and it is estimated that it will be named after it goes public for “Windows 12”.

Brad Sams revealed in the podcast that the internal codename of “Windows 12” is “Hudson Valley” (Hudson Valley), while the current internal codename of the Windows 11 system is “Sun Valley”. The Hudson Valley is a valley formed around the Hudson River in New York State, USA, from Albany and Troy in the north to Yonkers in the south.

UI tweaks

Microsoft has shown a desktop prototype at the Ignite conference in October 2022, which may be the “Windows 12” design.

The main changes and features are as follows:

  • The taskbar adopts a floating design and no longer occupies the entire screen width.
  • A floating search box is set in the middle of the top.
  • System icons, such as the notification area, appear in the upper-right corner of the screen above the desktop background.
  • Weather and other information in the “widget” is displayed in the upper left corner of the screen.

System Requirements Adjustment

According to German media deskmodder, the memory requirements of the “Windows 12” system have been upgraded from 4GB to 8GB, and a Pluton chip is also required for certain tasks and versions.

Pluton is a security processor integrated directly into the main processor of computers, tablets and smartphones. It is designed to provide a hardware-based root of trust that helps ensure a device’s security features are tamper-resistant and secure.

Microsoft intends to retain the existing TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and processor requirements. Increased memory may be related to cloud system CloudPC service.

In the past few days, there has been news about the next version of Microsoft’s Windows operating system and some unconfirmed preliminary system requirements for “Windows 12”. Now according to WindowsCentral, Microsoft is developing a new Windows project that will enable faster updates and more secure features.

Windows Central, citing unnamed sources, claims that Microsoft is now working on something codenamed “CorePC”. The report says it’s a “modular and customizable version of Windows” designed to be used on different types and form factors of devices. It will reportedly be similar to iOS and Android in that it will have read-only partitions, which should allow the CorePC operating system to be more secure and updated faster.

Microsoft is developing a version of CorePC that will compete with Google’s ChromeOS for low-cost laptops, according to the article. The article states, “A version of Windows running only Edge, web apps, Android apps (via Project Latte) and Office apps, designed for low-end education PCs, is already in early internal testing and is about 60-75% smaller than Windows 11 SE.”

Another version is reportedly in development with the same features as the Windows OS on the desktop, but with “state separation” for better security and faster updates. The report says that CorePC does not yet have a final release date, but Microsoft hopes to have it completed before the release of its next major Windows OS, which could be later in 2024.

Microsoft has not confirmed or denied any of these plans, so take this news with a grain of salt. Also, even if these reports are accurate, it is possible that Microsoft will make changes to these plans over the next few months, including in terms of features and release dates.

According to estimates and reports, Microsoft’s Next Valley (often referred to by outsiders as Windows 12) system may still be about a year away from launch, but we may already have a pretty good idea of what this next-generation version of Windows will look like.

Around October last year, Microsoft may have accidentally leaked a new Windows 11 interface showing a floating taskbar and notification area at the top. The first leaked image wasn’t very clear, but the new, clearer image has the words “Next Valley Prototype Design” clearly written at the top.

Microsoft seems to be gradually moving towards such a design goal. The company has quietly added strings to Dev build 25300 that add the following features: hide the taskbar clock, hide the time and date in the system tray, and turn on this option to hide the time and date information in the corner of the taskbar.

Brad Sams, vice president and general manager of Stardock Software, believes that the above changes are due to the fact that Microsoft may be testing Next Valley’s floating taskbar.

Here is the Windows 11 interface with these strings enabled:

In addition to the Windows 12 interface, Microsoft also seems to have made some small progress on the feature front. Senior exec Panos Panay says the next generation of Windows 11 and Windows 12 will be a combination of cloud and artificial intelligence-driven experiences, and Microsoft is slowly making progress in that direction. On the security front, the company is phasing out legacy components like MSDT, as well as VBScript, which has been exploited by hackers in the past.

Recently disclosed Intel internal documents show that the 14th generation Meteor Lake platform will support Win12 system, leading some users to speculate that Microsoft will further raise the threshold of Win12 system.

According to German tech media deskmodder report, Microsoft will not raise the system threshold too much for the time being, the requirements will be the same as the Win11 system, but the latest running memory requirements increased to 8GB.

Implementing AI-based features in Windows 12 means that Microsoft needs to strengthen its relationship with Intel, AMD and Qualcomm. So it’s not surprising to see the next operating system mentioned in the documentation.

Artificial intelligence-driven features typically require deeper integration with hardware, and the three PC processor makers are already working in that direction.

For example, AMD’s recent Ryzen 7000 mobile chip has a dedicated AI engine, Pluton, for Microsoft Windows Studio Effects, including noise suppression, eye contact, background blur, and more.

Attached are the possible system requirements for Win12 as follows:

Supported processors are the same as Win11

TPM 2.0 support required (AI engine Pluton may be optional)

8GB of RAM (4GB for Win 11)

64GB of storage space

Previously, there were rumors that Microsoft would update the system requirements of Win11 to force the use of SSDs as boot disks, but Win11 systems are not currently doing mandatory measures. However, Microsoft may make the use of SSD mandatory in Win12.

A hardware tipster @leaf_hobby recently deleted a post revealing that Intel has been informed of Microsoft’s next-generation operating system. Intel’s internal documents mention that the upcoming Meteor Lake platform supports Windows 12 systems. Intel’s Meteor Lake CPUs may include 20 PCIe Gen5 lanes, and Wi-Fi 7 will make its debut.

Microsoft and Intel declined to comment on the post. In the summer of 2022, a new report says Microsoft has changed its plans to go back to releasing new Windows every three years, rather than continuously servicing one version (remember the “Windows 10 is the last Windows”) The last Windows 10. Although Microsoft has not yet confirmed Windows 12, it is already predicted to be the successor to Windows 11.

Microsoft is already trying to integrate AI into Windows 11. Although the first attempt was a bit lame, Microsoft is exploring different ideas to enhance its operating system with AI, as Microsoft’s consumer marketing chief explained in a recent interview with The Verge.

“As we begin to develop future versions of Windows, we will consider the natural role AI plays in their experience.”

Implementing AI-based features in Windows 12 means that Microsoft needs to strengthen its relationships with Intel, AMD and Qualcomm. So it’s not surprising to see the document mention the next operating system. AI-driven features typically require deeper integration with hardware, and the three PC processor makers are already working in that direction. For example, AMD’s recent Ryzen 7000 mobile chip has a dedicated AI engine for Microsoft Windows Studio Effects, including noise suppression, eye contact, background blur and more.

Intel’s Meteor Lake platform is expected to arrive in 2024, just before the third anniversary of Windows 11 and the big debut of Windows 12. However, there is no official confirmation yet. Moreover, Microsoft’s plans can be changed at any time, just as some products like the Surface Mini were canceled before their release.
