Looking at the innovations that are coming, on devices with powerful NPUs, the core question is how to write applications that fully leverage local computing and cloud inference, which is what we plan to achieve through the Windows AI ecosystem.
So I think we're actually going to have a lot of applications with local models, hybrid models, and that's the future of AI.
Mixing is important because not all PCs are capable of rendering AI workloads natively. Next-generation computers equipped with NPUs will be able to handle more aspects of artificial intelligence locally, but not everything can be done on the device.This will be how features like Microsoft Copilot work, where most of the functionality you’ll use is rendered in the cloud but mixed with on-device processing where it makes sense.
