According to feedback from multiple users on Feedback Hub, there is a bug in the file manager of the Win11 22H2 system. When the user is using other applications, the system will automatically open the file manager randomly.

One user wrote in a community feedback thread: “One or more file manager windows are running in the background, and then open an application such as Firefox or Edge browser. After a few minutes, the file manager window will pop up and be in focus state”.

Another user wrote in the post: “While I am using other applications (such as web browsing), the file manager window will randomly jump to the front. This time I am in a meeting on Zoom, and the file manager automatically opens “.

According to the Windows latest report, Microsoft acknowledged these reports and said that this is a known problem, but Microsoft did not acknowledge it in public. The news says that Microsoft is fixing the focus error problem of File Explorer, but it is unclear when the fix will arrive.

The first major update to Windows 11, “22H2”, was officially released on September 20 and provides a variety of enhancements to key features in the OS, such as bringing folder support to the Start menu and allowing users to resize pinned icons.

Win11 22H2 also enabled support for “drag and drop” on the taskbar, allowing users to easily drag and drop files to applications through the taskbar. Other features include tab support in File Explorer, a new sidebar in File Explorer, actionable suggestions, a new layout for the snapping window, deep integration of Microsoft accounts in Settings, and more.

Windows 11 22H2 also has an interesting hidden feature that allows you to directly adjust the system volume using the mouse wheel. While it’s already possible to use a mouse to adjust the volume if it supports media mode, this new feature in Windows 11 22H2 allows users to use the scroll wheel of any mouse to control the computer’s volume.

As shown in the figure above, the user can place the mouse pointer on the volume icon on the taskbar, and then directly scroll the mouse wheel to change the system volume.

Microsoft is preparing several “Moment” updates for the Windows 11 operating system, “Moment” is an internal codename for delivering larger cumulative updates in addition to annual updates.

Microsoft hopes to roll out new features for Windows 11 every few months, for example, the first Moment update added tabs and a sidebar to File Explorer. The next Moment update is expected to introduce even more improvements, scheduled to roll out sometime in February or March. The third Moment update may arrive in May 2023. It is not clear what new features this update will have, but in the latest update, support for “seconds of the taskbar clock” is mentioned, which may be possible in the future The Moment update will add this feature to Windows 11 22H2. Microsoft is also believed to be working on improvements for the task manager, which could appear in a Moment 3 or Moment 4 update.

Since the launch of Win11, one of the points that Microsoft has constantly emphasized is that security is the cornerstone of the new operating system. Therefore, Win11 has significantly increased the device threshold, requiring devices to meet conditions such as TPM 2.0 and Virtualization-based Security (Core Isolation).

Microsoft can further enhance the security of Win11 22H2 by deploying Intel’s Total Memory Encryption – Multi-Key (TME-MK) technology, according to a new blog post written by Jin Lin, PM Manager for Azure and Windows OS Platform at Microsoft.

TME-MK technology is only supported on Intel’s third-generation Xeon scalable Ice Lake processors and subsequent models for server CPUs and on Intel’s 12th-generation Alder Lake processors and subsequent models for desktop CPUs.

TME-MK is already available on Intel 3rd generation Xeon server processors and Intel 12th generation Core client processors. azure, Azure Stack HCI and now the Windows 11 22H2 operating system also take advantage of this next-generation hardware capability. tme-mk is compatible with 2nd generation VM version 10 and subsequent versions.

To start a new virtual machine with TME-MK protection (assigning it a unique encryption key different from other partitions), use the following PowerShell cmdlet.

Set-VMMemory -VMName -MemoryEncryptionPolicy EnabledIfSupported

To verify that the running virtual machine is enabled and using TME-MK for memory encryption, you can use the following Powershell cmdlet.

Get-VmMemory -VmName | fl *

If the virtual machine is protected by TME-MK, the following values are returned.

MemoryEncryptionPolicy : EnabledIfSupported
MemoryEncryptionEnabled : True

The Windows 11 22H2 mess has become even more confusing, as Microsoft has blocked big feature upgrades on some PCs due to potential gaming and performance issues. Microsoft has removed Windows 11 22H2 versions from its Windows Update server for specific devices after acknowledging reports of problems affecting gaming performance on the machines.

The company said it is working on another cumulative update to address the issue and will release it in the near future.

Version 22H2 of Windows 11 was released in September as part of the normal feature update cycle through Windows Update for all supported versions of Windows. This is the first major feature update for Windows 11, and it comes with many long-awaited new features, which is why many users are eager to download it.

In the documentation, Microsoft acknowledges NVIDIA’s statement that Windows 11 accidentally turns on “GPU performance debugging”.

One of the most frustrating issues with Windows 11 is that it affects gamers, with some users complaining of a drop in FPS when playing games. Uninstalling the update fixes the issue, confirming speculation that the problem lies in a feature upgrade. 22H2 for Windows 11 made gaming performance worse, audio was also affected, and some people noticed frequent lagging.

NVIDIA itself has been looking into these reports, and they’ve also released two official fixes via the GeForce application and driver updates, but the chipmaker’s efforts alone are not enough.

After ignoring the reports for weeks, Microsoft is now actively investigating the issue, and the company has pulled updates for the affected machines.

The tech giant said it is making adjustments for cumulative updates, and it also reminded users not to use the “Update Now” button or the media creation tool to manually upgrade until the issue is resolved.

Windows Insiders have been testing the feature upgrade for months, and the issue was flagged by some testers earlier this year. Some highlighted performance issues with Windows 11 22H2 in March itself, but it looks like those reports were missed by Microsoft, and the company released this update without addressing the issues. There have also been reports of other issues with the update.

We can only hope that Microsoft will be able to address these issues in the coming weeks, but the Windows 11 2022 update does seem to be more stable than previous Windows 10 feature updates. For the most part, the problems were not too wide and were quickly resolved.

Windows 11 22H2 Task Manager has received a major upgrade in front of beta testers in the development channel. Task Manager, still the best tool for finding applications that slow down PCs and kill running processes, is getting a search bar and more features to help users quickly identify applications that are hogging system resources.

Like the tab support in File Explorer, this is one of those features that many people have been asking for for a long time. The search bar is a standard feature that should have been there all along, but wasn’t until now. With the search bar, you can find an application or process like “File Explorer” by simply typing the name of the file in the search bar.

You can then select the process and right-click on it to perform actions such as “end the process” or open the location of the file. The search bar makes Task Manager more user-friendly, and you can now easily monitor your system’s resources by searching for the name of a specific application or process in Task Manager.

As you may know, Task Manager has also been updated to support Dark Mode in version 22H2 of Windows 11. However, it is not possible to open Task Manager in light mode when the operating system itself uses a dark theme.

Microsoft has also added the ability to change its theme directly through Task Manager’s settings. No matter what the active Windows theme is, you can now select your preferred theme in Task Manager.

Task Manager theme preferences in Settings

Microsoft has also enabled dark mode support for in-app dialogs. Almost all dialogs have been updated with dark mode and smooth design, but the two traditional dialogs – “Run New Task” and “Properties” – are still using the classic Win32 theme, at least for now.

Updated modern Task Manager dialog box

Microsoft is currently testing these Task Manager improvements in the Beta channel, and users outside of the Windows Insider Program will get the update in a few months.

According to sources familiar with the development, Task Manager received a major update in September 2022, and it looks like more changes are planned for the app. This is a welcome shift in Microsoft’s approach after many users thought Task Manager development had been abandoned by the tech giant for so long.

It’s also clear that Microsoft is now paying attention to the small details in popular apps like Task Manager, and we expect more design tweaks in the coming months.

Mozilla has released a Windows-specific update for Firefox, version 106.0.3, which is now available in the stable version and brings two important bug fixes for Windows users.

According to Mozilla, Firefox 106.0.3 fixes a bug that caused it to crash on startup when running on Windows, and also fixes an issue with the latest Windows 11 22H2 suggested actions feature that was incompatible and caused it to hang when copying text on a web page.

The Suggest Action feature is a new feature that Microsoft brought to users in the Windows 11 22H2 Moment 1 update. Another way to make users’ daily tasks, such as collaborating with colleagues, more efficient is to anticipate their needs and provide suggestions for actions they may wish to take.

For example, when there is a phone number or future date in the text, Windows highlights it so that it is easy to click and make a call via Phone Link, Team or Skype, or click to schedule an appointment, add an event in the Calendar app, and include the person the user is communicating with in the invitation.

Microsoft recently released Windows 11 22H2 Moment 1, a major update that brings a number of improvements to the core Windows 11 experience, but apparently, the company is already working on the next update to the operating system. Codenamed Moment 2, this update is expected to go live in early 2023, after the 2022 update and the end of the rollout period for Moment 1.

Earlier today, on the 8th Anniversary Webcast on the Windows Insider Program YouTube channel, the company was spotted running what appears to be an internal Windows 11 22H2 Moment 2 preview, build number 23003. This is a pre-recorded demo video of the touch-optimized tablet taskbar, with Microsoft explaining how the taskbar can go from its normal 48-pixel high state to a higher state for a touch-based user experience.

More specifically, Microsoft shows what appears to be a version of Windows 11 build 23003, which is believed to be an earlier version of the Moment 2 update. The company has yet to discuss anything other than a taskbar optimized for tablets, so the lineup of features that will be part of Moment 2 still seems deliberately cryptic.

And today is the second time Microsoft has mentioned an update to Moment 2. The previous one happened in early September. The internal build number at the time was 22940, which means that the company has had a number of development releases since then.

As far as the Moment 1 update is concerned, this new version brings a number of improvements, including suggested actions, taskbar overflow and instant access to the task manager thanks to the app being added to the taskbar’s context menu, new sharing improvements, and a redesigned Photos app. In addition, Moment 1 brings the File Explorer tab to all users.

Perhaps it can be said that Windows 11 and AMD Ryzen processors have not been better run-in so far, and the original 21H2 version was just released to the public last year, and problems related to CPPC2 were found. These issues were later fixed with a chipset driver update.

Now with the recent release of Windows 11 version 22H2, it looks like a new problem is plaguing Zen 4-based Ryzen 7000-series CPUs. CapFrameX (CFX) found that when the 16-core Ryzen 9 7950X’s single CCD (CPU compute chip) was activated, the configuration outperformed the default dual CCD 7950X. Each Zen 4 CCD has 8 cores and its cache, so, in essence, an eight-core Zen 4 CPU can outperform a higher core-count 16-core.

In order to better understand the problem and evaluate the scenarios affecting it, CFX decided to test two other conditions with simultaneous multithreading (SMT) disabled. So with a single CCD with SMT disabled, the 16-core, 32-thread 7950X is now reduced to an 8-core, 8-thread CPU. Just like the single CCD case, the case with SMT turned off produced similar results, showing better performance with fewer threads.

This doesn’t appear to be an isolated case, as experienced hardware benchmarker Hardware Unboxed (HBU) noticed a similar issue on their RTX 4090 test system. Obviously, this has happened more frequently in recent times.

Performance issues seem to be prevalent on Windows 11 22H2 (via @OneRaichu), and from the looks of it, it appears that Windows 11 22H2 is having scheduling issues on the new Ryzen 7000 CPUs, which is why more threads aren’t helping the OS engage in computing. There could also be a driver bug here similar to what happened recently with NVIDIA-like drivers. Perhaps the GPU driver itself is not utilizing the extra threads correctly.
