Toshiba recently launched the world’s first technology that can measure the amount of carbon dioxide and other substances emitted from factories in real time, 150 times faster than existing technology.

The company’s newest product, the “Unsplash”, is the world’s first technology to measure carbon dioxide and other substances in real-time.

The technology can be implemented using only a palm-sized sensor and can measure in as little as 1.7 seconds, compared to about five minutes for each component in the air with existing technology.

In an interview with Japan’s ABEMA Times, Akihiro Kojima, head of Toshiba’s Research and Development Center, said, “In fact, CO2 emissions have not been accurately measured in real-time before, and can only be estimated by rough calculations. With this technology, we will be able to measure the exact amount of CO2 in real time.

Akihiro Kojima also introduced the technology, which can be used to accurately calculate the greenhouse gas emissions reduced by factories and to promote the accelerated development of decarbonization technologies.

Technology companies have been active in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and many tech giants, including Apple, Qualcomm, Intel and Foxconn, have previously announced that they will complete their goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030~2050.

Foreign media said that Toshiba and Ricoh will officially announce the plan as soon as today. The news sparked gains in Toshiba and Ricoh shares. One of the important reasons.

According to the report, Ricoh will get a majority of voting rights in the new company after the merger, and Toshiba subsidiary Toshiba Tec will be merged into the new company. But both will retain their respective sales departments and brands.

Ricoh’s official response stated: “We are considering integrating the development and production of multifunctional devices with Toshiba. matter.”

Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Devices Corporation (referred to as “Toshiba”) announced that it and the Dongguan near-line hard disk production line cooperated by AFIT Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. (AFIT for short) was completed in Dongguan. The capacity of this production line will be given priority to the Chinese market. After the completion of the new production line, coupled with the original production capacity, by 2025, Toshiba is expected to double its production capacity by 2020.

Toshiba’s 2021 hard drive shipments and shipping capacity grew by 4% and 61% respectively, with total shipments reaching 54.68 million units and a capacity of 187.5EB, including a 73% jump in near-line hard drive shipments and a 114% soar in shipping capacity.

Toshiba has developed various new technologies, including FC-MAMR (Magnetic Energy Control – Microwave Assisted Recording Technology), MAS-MAMR (Resonant Microwave Assisted Recording Technology) and disc stacking recording technologies. Toshiba hopes to achieve the 30TB hard drive capacity target first, and then move on to higher-capacity products.

Nearline hard drives are primarily positioned for applications between customers’ online and offline storage. It refers to the storage of data that is not frequently used, or that does not have a large amount of data access, on a storage device with lower performance. But at the same time, the device requirements for these are rapidly addressed and have high transfer rates. Near-line storage has relatively low-performance requirements, but requires relatively good access performance, along with large capacity.

Semiconductor maker Toshiba announced Tuesday that its operating profit for the third quarter of fiscal 2022 (October-December 2022) fell 87.5 percent to 5.3 billion yen (currently about RMB 273 million), well below the 36.95 billion yen widely expected by four analysts surveyed by Refinitiv, according to foreign media reports.

The company lowered its operating profit forecast to 95 billion yen (currently about RMB 4.892 billion) for the full-year fiscal 2022 ending in March, down from 125 billion yen (currently about RMB 6.438 billion).

The company said its chief operating officer, Goro Yanase, resigned due to improper use of entertainment expenses several years ago. The statement on his resignation did not mention who will replace him.

Toshiba, founded in July 1875, is Japan’s largest semiconductor maker and the second-largest integrated motor maker and is part of the Mitsui Group, whose businesses include digital products, electronic components, social infrastructure equipment and home appliances.

Toshiba is evaluating a takeover offer from a consortium led by Japanese private equity firm Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) amid weak results.

JIP is said to have invited Chubu Electric Power Co. (Nippon Life Insurance Co.), Toray Industries and Central Japan Railway Co. among the more than 10 companies that have joined the consortium. The consortium submitted a formal proposal for the acquisition last week.

Nikkei News reported today that a consortium led by JIP GROUP (Japan Industrial Partners) has submitted a final takeover proposal for Toshiba, with a bargain price of about 2 trillion yen (currently about RMB 103.6 billion), including a loan of 1.6 trillion yen, in the hope of taking the troubled company private. The deal includes a 1.6 trillion yen loan to privatize the troubled company.

Two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said major Japanese banks, including Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, have issued commitments to lend to the JIP-led group. The 1.4 trillion yen loan is said to include a 200 billion yen working capital commitment.

They said that the final offer will also include an equity component of about 1 trillion yen. However, it’s not clear if that amount has been finalized.

Toshiba said it would not comment, while private equity firm JIP declined to do so outright.

Bloomberg reported earlier this week, citing people familiar with the matter, that several major Japanese banks had issued loan commitment letters to support the Japan Industrial Partners-led acquisition.

The deal was previously expected to reach around 2.2 trillion yen (about RMB 111.98 billion), but now it seems to be slightly higher. Previous sources had also said that the equity would be provided by a number of Japanese companies, including financial services group Orix, chipmaker Rohm and Japan Post Bank.

According to a new report from Trendfocus, HDD mechanical hard drive shipments almost halved in 2022, with shipments from all manufacturers falling sharply, and shipments from Seagate and Western Digital also almost halved.

According to this data, all three giants of the mechanical HDD HDD industry saw significant sales declines in 2022. 2022 saw Seagate’s HDD shipments fall by 43.7 percent and Western Digital was equally bad, down 43.0 percent year-over-year. Toshiba’s 2022 shipments fell 39.3 percent year-over-year.

▲ Figure source Trendfocus

Overall, HDD shipments fell 42.5 percent in 2022, to about 35 million or 36 million.

Trendfocus believes that the biggest disaster for HDD storage manufacturers right now is the decline in demand from the enterprise cloud storage business. 2022 cloud storage company mergers and inventory corrections saw 10 million to 11 million fewer HDDs purchased in the fourth quarter compared to the same period last year.

By category, shipments of 3.5-inch HDDs for general users fell 1 percent, while shipments of 2.5-inch HDDs grew 15 percent. Analysts say that in 2022, 92 percent of laptops sold were equipped with solid-state drives, a figure that will rise to 96 percent in 2023.
