According to Tianma, in recent years, the area of the vehicle display screen has gradually increased, the specifications have been improved, and there are more multi-screen and multi-screen combination products. However, the increasing operation functions and complex overload of information still pose hidden dangers to driving safety. In response to this, the Tianma R&D team launched the Invisible Display Technology solution.

▲ Schematic diagram of Tianma invisible display technology solution

Tianma’s 9.0-inch Invisible Display vehicle center control display is equipped with this invisible display technology. All knob and switch interaction functions are hidden by the control panel and need to be realized by touching the screen and other actions. When you have a display requirement, “call the screen”, the screen will automatically light up and start the display work; when the screen display is not needed during driving, the display screen will automatically turn off. This allows the screen to be seamlessly integrated into the car interior panel when the screen is off so that the driver will not be disturbed by the information brought by the screen so that the driver can focus more on the road conditions and ensure the safety of the car.

▲ Illuminated state

▲ Unlit state

The technical principle of invisible display technology is to use LCD as a light source for displaying information, and let the light source pass through a special translucent decorative material attached to the glass cover to present the final “invisible display” effect. In order to achieve such a display effect with its own sense of technology, it is necessary to achieve seamless splicing of the display frame and decorative panel materials, while taking into account the display brightness and high contrast. This is a technical difficulty. On the one hand, it is necessary to accurately control the transmittance of translucent decorative materials, and on the other hand, it is necessary to optimize the light source of LCD display information. If the LCD information source is too bright, a bright area similar to a postcard will be generated on the panel, and the border of the picture will be marked, which will not only affect the visual experience but also bring hidden dangers to safe driving. If the brightness of the display light source is reduced, the amount of light passing through the decorative material may be reduced, resulting in a blurred image display.

This car display has good display capability, and its resolution remains as high as 1440×810 on the coating material; the cinema-level high brightness is maintained at ≥400 cd/m²; the ultra-high contrast ratio of more than 30000:1 supports enhanced light and shade Contrast and rich color expression.

Tianma said that the application of the invisible display technology solution is not only limited to the central control display but can be extended to the invisible door display to achieve an integrated display effect and enhance the user experience.

According to the Tianma Microelectronics public news, Tianma launched a new generation of CFOT technology applied to OLED screens, to meet the needs of mobile phones’ long battery life, screen bending, screen colour reality and so on.

Tianma’s CFOT technology is called Color Filter On Touch, which simply means that the R&D team has developed CFOT technology to replace the polarizer in the OLED screen structure.

In OLED screen construction, the polariser is an opaque plastic sheet that prevents light from entering the screen from outside and interfering with the display. Without the anti-reflective effect of the polariser, an OLED screen would reflect like a mirror. On the other hand, when the OLED screen self-illuminates through the polariser, the brightness of the light drops by more than 50%, resulting in high power consumption. By replacing the polariser with the CFOT technology developed by Tianma, the light transmission rate is officially increased by more than 30% and the power consumption of the panel is reduced by more than 25% (measured values).

Officially, with the breakthroughs in innovative technologies such as HTD and MLP, Tianma claims that with the integration of HTD+MLP+CFOT, the power consumption of the entire panel based on relevant application scenarios can be significantly reduced by over 30%. Consumers can enjoy the smooth experience of a 1Hz-120Hz intelligent dynamic refresh rate screen while relieving the worry of low power consumption.

In addition, another innovative advantage of Tianma’s CFOT technology is that it significantly improves the folding and curling performance of flexible screens. Commonly available flexible folding screens often suffer from peeling of the adhesive material underneath the polariser when repeatedly bent. By replacing the polariser with CFOT technology, the problem of adhesive peeling failure can be solved, while reducing one layer of plastic and one layer of adhesive, reducing the size of the screen stack, achieving the ultimate bending radius and passing the bending test over 200,000 times.

At SID2022, Tianma showcased its ultra-thin stacked screen with CFOT technology, which enables ultra-thin curling through the material and adhesive design adjustments, as well as curling more than 100,000 times.

In addition, Tianma’s CFOT technology has been studied to improve light transmission while further enhancing the colour gamut of the screen, allowing for the experience of super retina-quality natural colours. Officially, screens with CFOT technology have a 15% higher NTSC colour gamut than screens with polariser solutions, which is an industry-leading level. The colour display is more realistic and natural, with better colour purity and colour expression than traditional OLED screens.

Tianma’s new generation CFOT technology can be widely applied to foldable mobile phones, cars, notebooks and future curly flexible display products.

Tianma issued a paper to introduce the ultimate low-power technology solution for LED screens: HTD + MLP technology. Officially, under the strong combination of the two technologies, the panel power consumption of the whole machine based on the relevant application scenarios to achieve a significant reduction of about 15%.

According to the introduction, the HTD (Hybrid TFT Display) developed by Tianma’s R&D team is a panel technology that intelligently and dynamically adjusts the screen refresh rate, realizing a 6-frequency dynamic refresh mode from 1Hz to 120Hz. When the cell phone screen displays images, text and other low frame rate content, it can be automatically reduced to an ultra-low 1Hz refresh rate, thus reducing drive power consumption; in games, page scrolling and other occasions requiring a high frame rate, the screen can instantly power up and the interface operation is smooth, ensuring the ultimate dynamic display effect.

On top of HTD technology, Tianma has successfully integrated MLP (Micro Lens Panel) technology to further reduce screen power consumption. MLP technology changes the transmission path of light by adding a lens structure to each light-emitting pixel, and by introducing a high refractive index and high transmittance materials so that the originally dispersed light can be focused on the screen.

The combination of Tianma HTD+MLP low power technology is currently being introduced into mass production for verification.
