We learned from social platforms that the Tesla Cybertruck has arrived at a domestic airport. According to previously released official information, Tesla Cybertruck is about to go on a nationwide tour in China. As you can see from the registration page, the city for the first show has not yet been finalized. It depends on the voting results of consumers. It is currently on January 17 Registration opens on March 31st. As can be seen from the event description, consumers participating in this tour may have the opportunity to test drive the Cybertruck. Previously, Elon Musk said on social media that it would be very difficult for Cybertruck to be legalized on the road in China, but Tesla would ship a prototype as a demonstration.

According to Tesla China’s official website, Cybertruck will have Cyberbeast beast version, all-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive versions. The rear-wheel drive version of Cybertruck will be launched in China in 2025. In terms of power parameters, the Tesla Cybertruck rear-wheel drive version has a cruising range of 402km, 0-100km/h acceleration in 6.7 seconds, a top speed of 180km/h, and a towing capacity of 3402kg. In terms of body size, its length, width and height are 5683/2201/1791mm respectively.

Currently, in many big cities in China, pickup trucks are classified as trucks and are basically prohibited from traveling on core road sections. Taking Beijing as an example, trucks are prohibited from driving on the roads within the Fifth Ring Road from 6 a.m. to 23 p.m. Even high-end pickup trucks such as the Ford F-150 cannot change the nature of the vehicle. However, many cities are also lifting the ban on pickup trucks.

The Tesla Cybertruck has attracted a lot of attention with its angular appearance, and the unique design of its wipers has also triggered heated discussions. Recently, a YouTuber reviewed this electric pickup truck and used one word to describe the vehicle’s wipers – “giant wet noodles.”

YouTuber Kyle Conner recently posted a detailed review of the Cybertruck, which highlighted the vehicle’s wipers. Unlike traditional wipers, which are very hard, the Cybertruck’s wipers seem to be extra soft. In the video, Kyle Conner easily peeled off the wiper from the windshield, and the wiper drooped down like a “giant wet noodle”.

“The longest wiper blade in a production car in the world? That’s crazy,” Conner exclaimed. “It’s like a giant wet noodle. It’s incredible.”

Conner suspects the wiper may be missing a second blade, and it’s unclear whether it’s defective or if it’s the same on other delivered vehicles. He also points out in the video that the wiper moves pretty fast considering its size.

Last month, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s vice president of vehicle engineering, said in an interview with Jay Leno that Tesla had to abandon the traditional wiper design in order to remove rain from the Cybertruck’s oversized windshield. He revealed that the power of this wiper is close to 1KW, and a spoiler is designed at the end to prevent the wiper from deviating from the windshield when driving at high speed.

Before the Cybertruck was officially delivered last November, some questioned whether Tesla would keep the lone giant wiper, as early photos showed it couldn’t cover the entire windshield. Elon Musk has previously said that there is “no easy solution” to the Cybertruck’s giant windshield, and the original 2019 design didn’t even come with wipers.

Tesla began delivery of the first 12 Cybertrucks on November 30 last year, and this futuristic electric pickup truck will still spark discussions in all aspects.

Elon Musk claimed last month that Tesla’s Cybertruck pickup truck would achieve an annual production target of 250,000 units by 2025. According to a Reuters report citing nine sources, Tesla is still far away from such a production target because one of the “major” bottlenecks is the production speed of 4680 batteries.

This 4680 battery uses novel dry coating technology during its manufacturing process. Reuters conducted comprehensive calculations using public data and public data provided by the above-mentioned sources. The results show that the 4680 battery cells currently produced by Tesla’s Giga plant in Texas can only power 24,000 Cybertrucks per year, which is approximately equivalent to the target production. 10%.

If calculated based on the number of cells contained in the 4680 battery pack installed in the Cybertruck, Tesla needs to achieve its annual production target of 340 million batteries. In other words, the daily output should reach nearly 1 million units to meet the demand for 250,000 Cybertrucks.

Calculations show it currently takes 16 weeks for the Texas factory to produce 10 million batteries. This means an annual production of 32.5 million of these batteries, equivalent to the battery usage of 24,000 Cybertrucks.

Elon Musk has also previously said that prototyping (producing the Cybertruck) is easy and production is “hell.” This time, according to these nine people, Tesla has not yet solved the problem of “dry coating” on an industrial scale. They say the anode dry coating of the 4680 cells is currently fine, but they are having trouble producing the cathode dry coating – the most expensive part of the battery.

Tesla also hopes to use the 4680 cells to power other vehicles, especially a $25,000 (Note: currently about 179,000 RMB) small car expected to be launched in the mid-2020s.

Tesla plans to install eight production lines at the Texas factory in two phases, with the final four production lines set to be operational by the end of 2024, according to Drew Baglino, Tesla’s battery chief, in October. However, people familiar with the matter said that it is not easy to copy existing technology from one production line to another.

Tesla officials did not release information about the Cybertruck audio system. However, according to the recently disclosed parts catalog, the pure electric pickup truck is equipped with 15 speaker arrays, including 2 dedicated subwoofers.

Note: The Tesla Model S Plaid has a total of 22 speakers. The Cybertruck has streamlined the number, but upgraded the subwoofer.

YouTube channel host Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) previously shared the Cybertruck test drive experience, but the sound experience was not mentioned in the video. In subsequent interactions with netizens, MKBHD stated that “the speakers are indeed very loud.”

Tesla specially hired engineers from Bang & Olufsen to design the sound system for its electric cars, and has already used “unbranded” Bang & Olufsen speakers. It is expected that the Cybertruck will also use this solution.

Tesla recently updated its parts catalog to include the just-released Cybertruck pickup truck. The catalog lists the prices of some of the car’s key components and reveals some features that have yet to be officially confirmed.

Cybertruck Owners Club members found the prices on some of the vehicle’s key components to be quite reasonable. For example, the front fenders only cost $550 each (Note: currently about 3,938 RMB), which is relatively affordable considering the size of the Cybertruck. Additionally, since the vehicle does not need to be painted, the labor cost to repair a damaged fender may not be too high.

However, there are some parts that are very expensive to repair. For example, the huge windshield costs $1,900. Although the price itself is reasonable, considering the size of the Cybertruck windshield, repairs may require the use of specialized machines, so the overall cost may be much higher than The price of the part itself.

Another expensive component is the front steering actuator, which costs $3,300. Hopefully, the actuator will be durable enough to accompany the vehicle throughout its life cycle.

In addition, replacing the entire wiper arm and wiper blade assembly of the Cybertruck windshield wiper costs $165, or $75 for the wiper blade alone.

In addition to component prices, the parts catalog also revealed some features that have yet to be officially disclosed by Tesla. For example, the front bumper camera is heated to help the vehicle better use Autopilot and FSD functions in winter. In addition, the rear middle seat can be folded to reveal two cup holders with a “cyber” design.

Finally, Tesla seems to have left some interesting Easter eggs in the Cybertruck. For example, the rear closure panel has an outline of a Cybertruck embossed on it, an Easter egg that might surprise owners when they start working on their vehicle.

Since the release of the Tesla Cybertruck, its unique shape and design have triggered widespread discussion, and the issue of the car’s collision safety has been even more controversial. Some critics believe the Cybertruck, with its short nose, exoskeleton structure and stiff steel plates, has almost no crumple zone, making it ineffective at protecting passengers in a crash.

Recently, Tesla published a post on the social platform X explaining in detail how the Cybertruck’s front crumple zone works. Tesla admits that the Cybertruck does have a smaller front crumple zone than other pickup trucks with huge engine bays.

However, Tesla notes that the Cybertruck’s front chassis casting also plays an important role in reducing the impact on occupants in a crash. Tesla wrote on Reduce the impact on drivers and passengers.”

Currently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have not yet evaluated the safety of the Tesla Cybertruck. However, it is noticed that Tesla’s cars have always been known for their high safety. The Model S’s crash test performance was so good that it even caused damage to NHTSA’s test equipment. The Model X has also proven to be extremely safe, as have the Model 3 and Model Y.

At the Cybertruck delivery ceremony held on November 30, Elon Musk went all out to promote the advantages of this electric pickup truck. But is this long-delayed new Tesla car really as good as Elon Musk says? Some ordinary people may not think so.

Elon Musk didn’t hold back on his praise for the Cybertruck. Elon Musk said at the delivery ceremony, “This is our best product” and “the future finally looks like the future.” He also demonstrated the Cybertruck’s bulletproof capabilities, calling it “practical.” If we sum it up in Elon Musk’s words, the Cybertruck is better than a truck and cooler than a sports car.

So, what does Cybertruck look like in the eyes of mass consumers? Currently, Cybertruck has landed in the Tesla showroom, and ordinary people can take a close look at this strange-looking pickup truck. Foreign media technology editor Alistair Barr recently went to the Tesla showroom to find out what was going on and interviewed some visitors to hear what they said?

“If you buy it, you’ll get a divorce.”

Barr, a car enthusiast, went to the Tesla showroom in San Jose, Calif., on Dec. 9 to see the Cybertruck in action.

Tesla-Cybertruck

When the Cybertruck was released, Barr reserved one and put down a $100 deposit. But his beloved wife of more than 20 years has warned that if he does buy one, they will divorce. Clearly, the two have serious disagreements about the Cybertruck, and not just because of Elon Musk’s controversial comments. People who like the Cybertruck find it angular, and those who hate it find it big and bulky.

Too big

The Tesla showroom where Barr brought his 17-year-old daughter with him. But his daughter’s first impression of the Cybertruck wasn’t a good one. “It’s just too big,” his daughter said. In her opinion, the Cybertruck is too big to park. A Tesla showroom employee confirmed that the Cybertruck is bigger than a Ford F-150, growing several inches.

At the show floor, a young man in a brown jacket walked up to the Cybertruck. The Cybertruck looks cool, he said. However, his wife next to him said it was “too big”. Barr interjected that his wife was threatening to divorce him if he bought the truck. “Your wife is smart and right,” the man’s wife said. Another woman in the showroom said: “It’s too big. It’s just too big.”

Tesla employees don’t buy it

A young man from Italy stood looking at the Cybertruck. He is an employee of Tesla Germany and works in the supply chain. This time he came to inspect the Cybertruck for work. He said that after seeing it in person, the Cybertruck felt bigger in person, but not bad. However, he said he would not buy it because it was too expensive.

Workmanship details are not in place

Figure 5: Rear door panel not fully aligned with rear corner panel

A couple from Pleasanton, California, also came to the Tesla showroom to look at cars. The husband said he didn’t like the way the Cybertruck opened the door and pointed out fingerprints on one side of the door. He also said that one of the rear door panels was not perfectly aligned with the rear corner panel and was a little off. While he’s not a huge fan of Tesla, he predicts that Silicon Valley will soon be filled with such pickup trucks and that such radical designs will become more common. “This is where you want to drive a Cybertruck. It’s a very Big place”. His wife says she likes the look of the Cybertruck and is happy to drive it around, although she says she prefers the Model Y.

Disappointing price increase

A woman in her 50s sat on the side of the showroom looking at the Cybertruck. The design will make people “stop and look,” which is a good thing, she said. “You want people to notice you as you drive by. It’s cool. It’s very Silicon Valley. It’s very Elon.” But she said she was disappointed with the increase in price, given the Cybertruck’s range. The relatively low range of the cheapest Cybertruck models, which cost about $60,000, is a problem, she said.

The real car is better and more compact

The real car is more compact than the prototype

However, not everyone thinks the Cybertruck is bad. One customer in his 50s said he reserved one four years ago. He recently received an offer to buy a car and paid an additional $250. He chose the high-end Cyberbeast model. He came to see the Cybertruck for the first time and honestly the car looked better. “They’ve reduced the size of it a little bit compared to the prototype, making it more compact,” he said. His wife, standing next to him, said she liked the look, though not as much as her husband.

Mixed Blessings

One Tesla salesperson said the response to the Cybertruck’s design has been “mixed.” “50 percent hate it, 50 percent love it. There’s no ambiguity,” he said. The salesperson offered free on-site test drives of other Tesla vehicles to people who reserved a Cybertruck. Those who agree will be moved up in the Cybertruck reservation queue as an in-store benefit, he said.

During a delivery event held at the Texas factory in the United States earlier this month, Tesla announced that the pure electric pickup truck Cybertruck will use an 800V high-voltage battery system, and the auxiliary battery system has also been upgraded from the original 12V to 48V.

Tesla has now shared relevant design documents for its 48V electrical architecture with third-party automakers. Subsequently, Ford CEO Jim Farley also expressed his gratitude to Elon Musk and spoke highly of this behavior as beneficial to the entire automobile industry. Elon Musk then responded: “You’re welcome.”

Note: The battery (commonly known as the battery) currently used in mainstream cars is a 12v battery pack composed of 6 lead-acid batteries connected in series. It mainly supplies power for lighting, in-vehicle entertainment, electronic control units and other low-power electronic equipment.

However, with the diversification of in-car entertainment and the integration of more and more electrical components into cars, existing 12V batteries can no longer meet the needs of cars.

The Cybertruck launched by Tesla has upgraded the auxiliary battery system to 48V, and the opening of this related design will inevitably have a major impact on the entire car. It will inevitably push car companies to adjust the internal wiring and structure of the vehicle, bringing changes to the entire ecosystem. change.

By upgrading the voltage from 12V to 48V, theoretically the current flowing through will be smaller, which can reduce losses during transmission and reduce temperature. It can also reduce the need for wire diameter, allowing the use of thinner wires to save weight and cost. .

The Tesla Cybertruck pickup truck has a feature called “Wade Mode”, which is designed to help the vehicle drive in water and avoid damage.

It is noticed that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been insisting that the Cybertruck will be able to drive in water for the past four years. Last year, he even expressed the hope that the Cybertruck can cross small bodies of water.

While we’ve yet to see if the Cybertruck has true amphibious capabilities, Tesla has added a “wading mode” to the vehicle to help it deal with large amounts of standing water that might arise during storms.

The Cybertruck’s “wading mode” is listed as one of the vehicle’s off-road configurations, and its function is described as: “raising the height of the vehicle and pressurizing the battery when wading.”

Elon Musk said in October 2022 that for the Cybertruck to be an effective water vehicle, it would “need to have an electric propeller on the trailer hitch to go faster.” Tesla has yet to mention the propeller, nor is it featured on the recently released Cybertruck accessories page.

Given that Tesla used multiple videos to show off the Cybertruck’s acceleration and towing capabilities during its initial presentation, if the vehicle is capable of crossing water, Tesla will certainly demonstrate this in the video. Perhaps this feature is more about standing water on the road and designed to protect the vehicle and its battery pack.
